Can cvt J1 fluid be used in place of J4?

    Hi guys,

I know that the manual specifies J4 cvt fluid for the mirage.
However in my country J4 is not available commercially. It's only
Available through the dealer and apparently dealer controlled.

What I can find though is Mitsubishi cvt J1 fluid. Wonder if they are compatible.
Over in Malaysia I can get Mitsubishi cvt Eco J4 fluid that's for
The proton Inspira which is based on the Lancer. Wonder if this is the same as the usual cvt J4?

Amsoil is available in Singapore. Here is the link to the distributor.

Here is the link to their CVT fluid which meets Mitsubishi specs

It's not my car, but in my estimation it's not worth it. Unless the fluid is specifically designed and approved for your model transmission, don't do it. Stick to the manufacturer's specified fluid. That way, in any warranty or other repair work, the shop cannot blame the lubricant.

From what I understand, all automatic transmission fluid has additives specifically for particular transmissions, and it is unwise to use something not designed or specified for the model transmission.

Why invite expensive transmission failure in order to save some money by not buying from your dealer? Which would be cheaper - buying the proper lubricant or a transmission repair or replacement?

Thanks for the amsoil recommendation. However it seems that I can get other amsoil products but just not the cvt fluid here.

And I am worried about using aftermarket oils as the dealer might want to use this as a good reason to invalidate my warranty if anything were to happen to the gearbox in the future.

Wonder if anyone here has experience using the amsoil cvt fluid.

@eggman, the dealers here are always on the hunt to invalidate your warranty. I am hesitant to purchase the fluid from them as they will ask for the car's number plate and with that they would have put me on the black list of cars whose warranty is voided for servicing outside.
The dealer culture here is horrible. They try to absolve any responsibility wherever possible.
I really applaud dealers in America who are Flexible and reasonable and not rigid and not always looking for the smallest of reasons to void your warranty.

Regarding the fluid. I went over to Malaysia and got myself a 4liter bottle of "Mitsubishi motors genuine cvt fluid Eco J4" part number MZ320262. It's made in Thailand and is probably what the car came with from the Thailand factory.
I have googled and found that this is the correct J4 fluid for our cvt.
A post of a photo of a receipt on mirage Thailand club shows this fluid part number being used by the dealer.

I tried ordering from amazon or eBay but the shipping is ridiculously expensive.

Just did a drain and fill of my cvt fluid.
It's confirmed that the fluid I bought was the correct one
Drained out the old one and it was dark green. Opened up the bottle of j4 Eco and it was a clear green. Perfect!
I used up almost the full 4 litre bottle with a little left over.

So for those looking to buy the fluid, this is the right one for the Asian market.
The one available online based in the USA has a different packaging.
For the Asian market it's called Genuine CVT fluid Eco J4.

Here's a photo of the bottle for reference:

Hello Jongiabi and welcome to the forum.

If your vehicle recommends using J4, stick with J4. J1 is not OK. J4 is OK.

Though you might want to confirm this with an Outlander forum. This is a forum for the Mitsubishi Mirage. It is not a forum for the Mitsubishi Outlander.

    Best wishes.

No doubt, Ralphie. Heck, do a Mirage forum search for "Geo Metro" and see how many thread titles come up! At least the Outlander is a "cuz", as you say in Atlanta! LOL
