Anyone have luck removing oil filter with standard filter or strap wrench?

I don't have the 65-67MM 14 flute cap wrench. Has anyone got their filter off with the strap type, or do I need to go shopping for the cap type?
Got all my oil change stuff ready except the filter wrench.

I did it with the cap type wrech, but it was a royal pain in the neck because there's not enough room behind the radiator fan cover. Somebody here advised me to get pliers for the next time.

Ok thanks. I have the old strap, or band, type (several good quality ones, actually). Maybe it'll work better? We'll see, I just wanted to check so I don't have to stop and run out for a wrench tomorrow.
It does look tight in there, I see what you mean.
    Thanks for the reply.

I use a large channel lock pliers from above. It wasn't easy, and I could only move it a tiny bit at a time, but once it broke free you can get your hand in there.

Thanks. I see it's tight (not just the filter, I mean the clearance). Guess that Mitsubishi intends for it to be removed from the bottom?

Maybe so. Once I get it around the radiator hose, I remove it from above. I let it drain quite a while first, as it can get messy.

I think so. There's even a aperture in the bottom plastic cover under the filter.

I actually tried doing my 1st oil change with the strap type..TOTAL fail. Had to go back to the auto parts store and get the cap style.

In my opinion, the easiest way is to remove the bottom, plastic cover that R01k mentioned by removing the retainer pins that connect it to the bottom of the front bumper and get at the oil filter from the bottom that way. There is an aperture on the bottom plastic cover, but you'll have so much more freedom with the whole bottom cover off. And yes, have a catch pan ready for when you break the gasket seal on the oil filter as QUITE a bit of oil will come out.

My first oil change was a NIGHTMARE!

I'm glad I stuck with it though b/c now I pretty much have it down to a science and get to use whatever oil I want and make sure it's done right.

    Metal strap, or rubber?
I'm about to try the rubber type. Have been hours on this and succeeded in rounding off the filter flutes, that's all.
