Thread: DIY Fuel Filter Replacement (location: on fuel pump, in the tank)

  1. #11
What a pain to get to the filter on this thing! I'll start by having the 2 wiring connectors and fuel line un hooked already. I'll let you figure out. It's easy enough. Spin the lock ring, it's easier with the proper tool but a flat screwdriver and hammer works if you're careful. Attachment 9625 There is no visible filter on the pump. Attachment 9626 Attachment 9627
To get to it, first unplug the 2 connectors at the top of the unit, un clip the small white half cylinder piece at the bottom with the tiny black tube/hose attached to it and slide the hose out of it's holder next to the sending unit.
Then....there is a tiny c-clip that has to come off the bottom of the spring loaded rod. Attachment 9628 after that the large white plastic cylinder parts separate after prying 3 little clips.
It shoud now come apart. Attachment 9629 the filter/strainer/sock can now be removed from the bottom of the pump. It just pull off. Attachment 9630 NOTE: You don't need to take it apart as far as I did in the last pic. The sock just pulls off and there is no need to pull the pump retainer clip or rubber isolator off. I did just cause I couldn't tell how it came apart.
Now whether Mitsu carries these filters is unknown to me, I'm sure there is something that should work though. I'm not going to be changing this filter on any cars unless I see someone tossing hand fulls of dirt in the tank though or drives around for a week with no fuel cap and the fuel door open...

Great informative post thanks for getting gas in your cuticles just to please us!

If you get a chance @ its easy to do can you snap a few pics of the regulator and how it mounts up? It sits atop the pump

Edit: please note if you put that all back together the manual has specifications for tension/play on the fuel lines

There isn't really any need to actually measure 1mm of play but you get the idea of how snug it should be. The manual seems to over complicates things. As long as the line is clipped back on properly and the o ring inside isn't damaged or missing, you should be good to go.

Disclamer: If your not mechanically inclined and/or have any doubts whatsoever, just pay someone to work on your car. If it burns to the ground shortly after don't blame me!

Fummins .. do you have an idea or at least an estimate on how much fuel level in the tank that will keep the fuel pump at submerged condition?

Sorry I couldn’t say. I’d try to look at a tank that’s loose inside a wreck at work but you’ll have to wait a while because winter.
