    ----------------------------

I just read an eye-opening article about Mitsubishi's North American situation & strategy:

    Mirage facts...

    - 7,000 per year ... the number of Mirages the company expects to sell in the U.S. (for comparison, GM sells about that many Chevrolet Sparks every 2 months at current sales levels)

    - the primary reason the car is in North American market is due to U.S. dealers demanding more models to sell

    General highlights...

    - North America is by far the company's smallest market

    - U.S. sales of 64,000 (all vehicles) this fiscal year, vs. 357,000 in Southeast and Northern Asia in the same period

    - 2002 was its peak in the U.S., at 345k vehicles

    - the U.S. division has posted a loss every year since 2007

    - now has about 400 US dealerships

    - despite that, officials insist they're in it for the long run -- the company is not pulling out of the U.S.

    - the president of the company stated the U.S. division is in "transition", and a lot of change will come starting around 2015

    - the general situation has forced prices down; the brand has become the destination for sub-prime customers and people looking for deals...

Today, most Mitsubishi buyers come for the deal, resulting in transaction prices that trail almost every competitor.

Its kinda sad to see such low numbers expected in the US. I am very glad its selling so well elsewhere though.

kalifornia: I'm sure they meant to say "sublime".

    ---

daox: I agree 7k per year doesn't seem to make sense, given the sales of the Spark at 3-4k per month.

But there are only 400 Mitsubishi dealerships in the U.S. I didn't find an exact (current) number, but GM had "about 7,000" dealerships in the U.S. prior to the 2008 financial crisis. Even if GM is down to 5000 dealerships (UPDATE: it's 4300, not 5000. See post #18), post-crisis, compare that to 400 Mitsubishi dealers and it starts to make more sense.

I have traveled to many states (15) and a lot of people just don't know about Mitsubishi and their cars. I always see that people stare at my car. Some of them ask about it and some of them say that they like how it looks.
    This is my car.
