I remember back in 2005 or thereabouts, gas prices doubled overnight. People in my town went crazy lining up for gas. Geo Metros online were selling for 3x what they were previously worth. Even though gas prices are not high now, I do not mind only spending $15 or so to fill the tank in my Mirage.

There's a dealer not too far from me that has a brand new 2017 Spark for $8900. The other 2 on their lot aren't a whole lot more, $9900 and $10300.

If there are other dealers doing the same, then that explains it.

Even taking into account the exchange rate, that's still about half of what I pay up here in Tax Land.

Honestly if they brought the price down or gave a big rebate I'd buy one to replace my 2006 Fusion. Other than the power of the Fusion I think the Mirage is much easier to drive.

    December - U.S.

Mirage sales were well off from a year ago - about 50% down:
    1023 deliveries vs. 1555 (Dec. 2016).

Still, the car managed (barely) to eke out another year-over-year sales increase: 22386 (2017) vs. 22226 (2016)

I hate to be a downer, but I'll be surprised if that winning streak continues in 2018. The U.S. auto market has peaked. They'll need some heftier rebates to keep the metal moving.

And last month, the Chevy Spark squeaked past the Mirage to beat it for the year by a few hundred sales.

The good news overall for Mitsu in the States:

Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) continued its sales momentum in 2017 posting its fifth consecutive calendar year sales increase.

    - Total 2017 sales were 103,686, an increase of 7.7 percent over 2016, and the first time the brand has surpassed 100,000 vehicles sold since 2007.

    - For the month of December, total sales were 8,501 an increase of 15.1 percent over December 2016.
    Thank the SUV's!

    Canada

December was weak: 115 Mirages sold.

The opposite of the US, Canada has seen Mirage sales drop every (full) year it's been available:

    • 2014: 4048
    • 2015: 3361
    • 2016: 3112
    • 2017: 2502

However, the company as a whole is doing well in Canada:

Mitsubishi Motors Closes 2017 with Best Sales Ever
Overall sales establish new high-water mark for brand

Mississauga, ON – Jan. 3, 2018 – Mitsubishi Motors’ 22,706 vehicles sales in 2017 represented a 1.9 per cent increase over 2016, and the company’s best ever annual performance since it was established in Canada 15 years ago.
    Thank the SUV's!

This reminds me of Subaru's climb to popularity - slowly, year after year.

I fully expect the Mirage will continue to be offered here to comply with CAFE standards.

Subarus are huge in my area - despite the head gaskets and everything else.

Rebates are at an all-time low. That rebate was likely $1500 a year ago. At this end of the market these kinds of rebates make a difference.

What makes this number even worse is that it likely includes both the hatchback and G4 version of the car, whereas many previous totals were for the hatch only.
