I suggest this appeal is limited by a favorable economy. When the economy slows down, folks look for ways to save money and thus turn to economy cars. Always have and always will. In the meantime, Mitsubishi has something to offer and can demonstrate that it is proven, good & reliable.

    January sales Canada

109 Mirages -- second lowest month since launch.

vs: 370 Micras -- also second lowest month since launch. Probably not a coincidence.

Meanwhile the company saw a sales increase year-over-year of 2%.

hatchback vs. G4 sedan sales, 2017

Mitsu does not break down the proportion of hatch vs. sedan sales in its monthly or yearly sales updates. But I found this tidbit in an Autoblog article yesterday:

Mirage hatchback sales dropped quite significantly at just over 6,000, but Mirage G4 sedan sales increased by roughly the same amount.
    Source: https://www.autoblog.com/2018/02/01/...er-crossovers/

OK so it's a poorly worded sentence (I think he should have said "by just over..." instead of "at just over").

But it gives us a ratio for last last year of:

    ~16386 hatchbacks
    ~6000 sedans
    --------
    22386 total Mirages

Unfortunately, there's no source given for the figures. I emailed Mitsu's US PR rep to see if they'll confirm it.

Wouldn’t mind a big rebate on a G4, closest dealer closed though supposedly someone else is taking it over.

U.S: banner month for the company, not so great for Mirage

Mitsu just had its best sales month since 2007 in the US:

... reported February 2018 sales of 12,973 units sold, up 18.8 percent over February 2017, its best month since 2007. For the calendar year, total sales reported are 21,453, up 23.4 percent over the same period in 2017.

February's huge sales month attests to the love customers have for Mitsubishi's CUVs. Outlander had its best month ever in MMNA history with 5,290 units sold, up 44.3 percent over February 2017. Outlander Sport sales came in at 5,377, up 145 percent over February 2017 and also posted its best month ever.
1323 Mirages sold, down 53% from Feb 2017.

    Canada: best Feb sales ever

Best February ever for Mitsu in Canada, again thanks to the SUV's/CUV's:

135 Mirages sold, same as Feb 2017.

And still beating initial estimates of 7000/year or about 583/month for the US.

Gas on the west coast is now just a couple cents under it's record price from before the GFC. I wonder if that will affect Mirage sales. I sure am glad that I have one right about now!

Doesn't appear that people are rushing out to buy them in Canada.

However I know of someone who bought a Micra partly because a lot of the ads described it as fuel efficient (they still do). He was annoyed by the actual fuel economy. (He also failed to compare its actual ratings against its competitors -- it's the thirstiest of the bunch.)

give it time my dear Metro. Extended high prices can change things. Brutal prices led to a spike in Prius sales on the overpriced west coast in '07.

I test drove a Micra. It handled nicely for a little car if I recall correctly. Unlike your acquaintance, I checked the real world mileage and decided against it. The Mirage really is in a league of its own for its class.
