Winter is brutal here in Canada in the past few weeks.. I've been getting 8.8L/100km, ridiculous.. I am pretty sure they are fuel dumping in the ECU to compensate the cold weather, but is stupid, my 2007 Honda Fit just does similar gas mileage in winter. I guesstimate the Mirage is about 30% over fuel

Where are you? Much of Canada is experiencing near record levels of cold at the current time. Mileage is still pretty good on the west coast.

When temperatures are in the single digits, your engine is going to struggle to stay at 190 degrees F or above. I am running a 100% grill block right now with temps in the single-digit range. This is helping the engine run a little warmer and is a quick way to increase the intake air temperature by 20 degrees or so.

A grill block can be done with $2 worth of pipe insulation from a hardware store. Just cut it to length with scissors (or razor blade) and jam it in your grill. Below is what I run when temps are about 30-50 F. Once temps get colder, I block the grill completely (including the mail slot in my 2015). I have a Scangauge and can monitor my car's coolant temperature.

If you don't have a way to monitor coolant temperatures, always be a little conservative and leave at least a small section of your grill open when the outside temps are above 20 F.

My daily commute averages between 40-45 mpg, but I've definitely broken 50 mpg before! I would really have to search for the picture, but about 2 years ago we were able to achieve about 53 mpg and we did snag a picture of the dash.

This was on a summer day in the High Peaks of the Adirondacks, on long winding hilly/mountain roads. So we might have had some help with the downhills! On my trip from Chicago to upstate NY shortly after buying my Mirage, I averaged in the high 40s mpg with all those long flat highway miles.

Sprinterx29 long time no see. It's good to hear from you again. How's your Mirage holding up?

First tank of gas on my 18' gt was 40.5 mpg, but one thing i can tell is wind really kills the average mpg readout on my dash. There's been a pretty stiff crosswind the last couple of days on my commute back and forth to work. This works out to either a nice tailwind or nasty headwind on the 1st/last leg of my journey. Plus the temperatures are only in the 40s during the day, and I drive home before dawn, so it's still below freezing half the time. I'm excited to see what my summer mpg's will be like!

How much does a windy day affect other folk's mpg? i'm interested to hear.
    I try not to think...

Nimadro, wind and temp plays a huge role in effecting the mpg. I would say the tires as well. I'm currently still on my snow tires and mpg has fallen greatly. On top of that, the cold weather as well. The Mirage really shines during the hot/humid weather. I can easily get 48-52mpg while commuting home. With the temp in the mid 20s to mid 30s right now, I'm getting around 38-40mpg. I get close to about 260-280 miles on a full tank; factoring in that I drive about 70mph, wider snow tires, and temp, it's not too bad.

I will be switching to 13" Honda Civic VX wheels soon(once the temps stay above 35 degrees (f). I really want to see what kind of MPGs I'll be getting out of that setup.

Yup, wind has a huge effect.

For similar reasons, speed is critical too. See:

nice mild weather this past Saturday put me over 50mpg for the highway part of my trip but went down into the mid-40s once I arrived in town. No complaints! The mileage on this car if anything almost seems to be getting better with the passage of time.
