Darin tested out the effect of 'performance' air filters a while back with his 1.0L, 3-cylinder Geo Metro and found absolutely no difference.

Custom Mirage products: Cruise control kit, Glove box light, MAF sensor housing, Rear sway bar, Upper grill block

Current project: DIY Nitrous oxide setup for ~$100

However, if the pod is drawing warm air from the engine compartment, where the factory intake was drawing it from inside a fender (I'm not sure - just a guess), you could theoretically see a very small efficiency improvement as a result.

Warmer, less dense air requires a wider throttle opening to produce a given amount of power. That wider throttle opening reduces pumping losses, and that improves efficiency.

On the other hand, a cooler induction charge being denser should provide greater volumetric efficiency, hence intercoolers on turbo engines ?

General rule of thumb: Cold air for power, warm air for fuel economy. There are exceptions to each of those two rules though.

Ah so, live & learn. What about the turbulent air that a pod conversion would have to contend with ?

    Cheers

What do you mean by turbulent air?
