    Cheap Tires

So, the OEM tires on my 2014 Mirage are pretty much shot after 16,000 miles. I know they're supposed to last longer than that. I don't do any drifting or burn-outs with my car. Why did they wear out so quickly? I rotated per manufacturer's suggestion.

Walmart has some Solar 4XS 175/65R14 82H Tires for $32 each. How bad can they be? They have lots of positive reviews. Compared to Enasave at $123 each and assuming a 5% loss in mpg it seems like I could get a 20% decrease in cost / mile over the life of the tire if you just consider tire and gas cost.

Here are the numbers at same tire life:

    Enasave $533 / 35 mpg = $0.105 / mile tires & gas
    Solar $148 / 33 mpg = $0.084 / mile tires & gas

If the Solars last twice as far then:

Solar = $0.080 / mile tires & gas - not much different so not too dependent on tire life.

If there is a 10% loss in mpg, or 5% more than originally calc'd then there is 5% more loss in savings.

It appears that you'd need a 25% loss in mpg to make the costs equivalent between the 2 tire specs. So I guess I know what tires I'm going to buy to replace those Enasaves.

Where have I heard this question before?!?

Have you ever had the alignment checked on your car? If not, it's the absolute first thing you should do before you shop for new tires. Go find a shop (like NTB) that will check your alignment for FREE. The big thing you are looking for is if the alignment of your REAR wheels is off. Spend 5 minutes and read this thread for details. You do not want to change to a non-OEM size tire until you have verified that the REAR alignment on your car is OK. Again...go check out that thread. It's worth 5 minutes of your time and could save you a lot of grief.

If you're on a budget and you have to go that route, go ahead as long as someone else here has tried them and found that they're OK. People here have found some good reliable "budget" brand tires.

My question is... If you can make a tire in China, ship it 7,000 miles to North America, sell it for $32, and still make money on it...how good can they be?

Thanks @Top_Fuel. You got my attention with this. I thought the problem was limited to later models. I'll go have the alignment checked soon.

    Sounds good. Keep us posted.

Changing to a different size 14-inch tire is definitely going to save you money. Just make sure you don't have any rear alignment issues before you do this.

Wow 16000 miles? Yeah that doesn't sound right. I also agree on getting your alignment checked front and back. I just replaced the factory tires yesterday on my 2014 at 47600 miles. 2 of them were bald of course. But at 16000 mine were still excellent. I switched to 185-60-14 on the factory steelies. Also yesterday was my FIRST trip to the dealer since purchasing the car over 3 years ago. (airbag light). The recalls fixed that.

Congratulations ed100. I believe that's the highest mileage yet on a set of factory Enasaves.

    Well done.

Wow, 16000 miles! I'd be changing tires every 4 1/2 months at that rate.

It's a great honor and I am very proud! Good thing I got new tires before the snow flies. Otherwise it would have not been good!

wow, 16k? My 2014 Mirage got me 33k out of the stock tires, and my 17 has now 30k and still could probably go another 7500-10k as I can see. Do you have pics of the tires? Do you drive on unpaved roads everyday?

I don't have pics of the tires. They are evenly worn, look like worn tires. The wear bars are within 1mm of the tread surface. I drive on pavement, generally don't use the car in the winter.
