    Really? Bummer! I'll edit my post for clarity.

    So, this only controls when you go to the lowest temp setting, it doesn't kick in the A/C?

    Not really (unless I misunderstand what you're asking.) If I understand correctly, selecting Auto operation allows the Automatic A/C ECU to control fan speed, air selection dampers (inside v. outside air, air mix dampers, etc.) PTC heaters - well, everything climate related. The factory setting of Automatic A/C enabled has the compressor running during normal operating conditions. It does this whether conditions call for heating or cooling. I suppose this is for occupant comfort.

    Disabling the Auto A/C stops the Automatic A/C ECU from running the compressor on a regular basis. The compressor will need to be turned on manually for cooling. However, the Owner's Manual section on Comfort Controls (section 7) mentions that with Automatic Air Conditioning, if the defogger (windshield) is manually selected, it will run the compressor automatically whether Auto A/C is enabled or disabled. This operation is very much like any other car these days.

    I like the Automatic Air Conditioning controls and think it's one of the greatest features of these little cars. Much like manual controls, I can set the temperature I want and the ECU handles the rest. On a cold morning's start, it will turn on the PTC heaters and run air over the windshield to reduce fogging, and turn off the PTC heaters once the coolant temp is up to 167℉. Once the coolant warms up, the fan speed automatically increases to heat the cabin area. As the cabin area approaches it's setpoint temperature, the Auto A/C ECU backs off the fan speed to maintain temperature. Since I have Automatic A/C disabled, it does not activate the compressor while operating in Auto mode. If I select the Defogger - that is, I want more air directed over the windshield - it will turn on the compressor unless I manually deselect the A/C while using the defogger.

    Ha! Now I'll have to pay attention to how it works! I've gotten so used to the automatic controls of set it and forget it, I've forgotten how it behaves. :scratches head:...

    It will activate the compressor whether Automatic Air Conditioning is enabled or not. The AC compressor can still be manually switched off once you activate the windshield defroster manually. Once switched off, it will remain switched off through successive ignition cycles until you change the climate control settings and then go back to the windshield defroster. Then you must manually switch it off again.

    Right - thanks for clarifying this. I should have included this earlier. The Auto A/C ECU will activate the A/C compressor when windshield defogging is selected, whether Auto A/C control is enabled or disabled. Once Auto A/C is disabled, the ECU won't turn it on automatically unless windshield defogging is selected.

    I have disabled my Automatic A/C control. Every time I manually select windshield defogging, the compressor turns on until I manually turn it back off. This happens regardless of ignition cycles. As long as I leave my climate controls in Auto mode, the compressor doesn't turn on.

    I'll check and verify this operation today in our travels for holiday family get-togethers. Safe driving everyone.

    Whew, it was cold out this morning on the commute to work. Ambient temp was -9F / -23C. I plugged in my block heater for around 25 minutes, and it got the coolant temp up to 83F according to the scangauge. However, the engine did not like the cold. It took a few extra cranks before firing up, and when it did, it ran rough for a good 20-30 seconds as I scraped the windows. The inside was frosted up a bit too, bleh.

    Surprisingly, I still got pretty decent mileage coming to work. The scangauge showed I got 35 mpg while the MFD said a bit over 37 mpg. Not bad at all!

    I also noticed today as I selected the defrost windshield button, my A/C did not turn on. Perhaps because it was so cold? I'm not sure, but it did not kick in.

    I had my first fill up with Swarthy last night. 330 miles on 7.8 gallons of gas have me a hair above 42 mpg. Not bad considering I've done quite a bit of idling this past tank dealing with the heat (heater core / flushing the coolant) issues. It has also been unseasonably cold the past week or so. I really look forward to seeing what this car will get on the next tank full.

    Wait until May when you finally hit 50 mpg and just quietly say to yourself, "Awwww yeeeeaaaah."
