SO my lofty fuel economy goals are obviously out the window.

    Check my fuel log haha.

Looks like it'll be a struggle to keep this car above 40mpg. Damn.

Blame my wife and her 2km commute to work with a 5 minute defrost time in the driveway.

I let my car idle for about 15 seconds before gently driving off.
The small size of the motor lets it warm up really fast in under 6 to 8 km. Idling a cold engine is really hard on it.

The commute distance is beyond your control and is really hard on things like the exhaust system, which never gets hot enough to get rid of condensation, so it rots years before its time. The oil takes a real beating too...all the water build up in it never gets warm enough to evaporate off.

It would help a bit if you used a severe service oil change schedule.

Put a magnetic cover over the windshield?
Install a block heater or maybe an oil pan heater instead?
Get the wife to find a new job?
Move way out so the Mirage can warm up properly? lol

Block heater is easy to install, and it's better to install them sooner than later. They just slide into a hole in the front of the block and clip in place. Hardest part is finding the hole. ha

Cars warm up faster if driven rather than idled. The fuel burned will do more than just heat the motor, and the transmission warms up too.

When summer rolls around you'll see a pretty substantial bump too.

I average very low myself with idling a lot, winter temps, pushing my mirage to keep up with traffic. Driving uber full time I average 30-36 mpg, most drivers are averaging 20 out of a new corolla driving full time so that's not too bad.
2014 ES F5MBD aka 5MT. I am a full time Uber driver, if you want to drive for uber DO not sign up without my referral code for a bonus .

Makes me feel pretty good, I'm averaging 41.3 mpg over the last 18k miles, of course my commute is 50 miles each way running 65-70 mph.

Exactly, just let it idle for 30 seconds, try to scrape as much ice off and use a rag to wipe off condensation inside, then keep RPMs under 2000 and drive slowly.
