    Another quick update.

I've mainly been working on getting the switch insert just right. Getting clips to snap in and hold nice and tight without being a pain to install is an interesting balancing act. I also have to make sure the tabs are strong enough and won't snap off after a few uses. It has to clip into place, and be held tight so it doesn't rattle. It also has to be 3d printable! There are some pretty large constraints on printing this stuff. You can't just print any shape you want, it has to be designed to be printable.

Here is a picture of the blanking plate for reference.

And here is a more updated version. You can see the text is a bit bigger and bolder.

    Another day, another update.

I've started building the cruise control switch assembly. I added a bunch of pictures to this post because its hard to get good pictures of small black plastic bits that show all the detail.

Here is the 3d printed switch mounting plate. It will hold the tactile switches and also has clips to hold the panel into the dash.

These are the tiny tactile switches I'll be using. Pen cap added to show the scale. They're pretty darn small, and thus perfect for this application.

And, here we have the switches mounted in the mounting plate. As you can see, even though they're really small, there isn't a ton of extra room.

This is a slightly newer version. Its hard to see, but I added a supporting rib right down the middle. Clipping the mounting plate to the face plate was making the mounting plate bend, so it needed some additional rigidity.

Here is an initial print of the face plate. As you can see, the text simply wasn't big enough and therefore wasn't being printed at all. I had to enlarge and make it more bold to have it show up.

Here is a more polished version with actual text on it. Getting closer!

Have you considered rocker switches? Most cars probably only have one blank panel though. Attachment 10830 This is in a 3 ton hino(picture spun on me)

Yeah, I think I might be able to get two small rockers in there, but that would leave no room for labeling. I'd like to keep it all on a single panel too.

    Next up, soldering!

With the 3d parts pretty much set, its time to get down to the electrical component hook up. Basically, we have a bunch of resistors that need to get connected between the two switches. Then, we have two wires that go out and get hooked up to the car's wiring harness. It sounds pretty simple, but it is all crammed in a pretty small area. I didn't get any in process pics, but here is the nearly finished deal. It just needs wires added to it.

Me too. But it'd probably be just a melted mess of solder and plastic by the time I gave up.

Wow, I hadn't realized you were working on a custom solution until this was referenced in another thread. Very nice work, and it makes me want to play around under my dash I'll definitely buy a kit from you when you're ready to start selling. I like the rocker switch idea myself, but finding really specific shapes of switches like that is difficult, and any custom solutions that spring to mind just seem too fragile.
