It indicates freezing outside conditions.
This is covered in your owner's manual (check page 5-61 & 5-65).
Funny you are just now discovering this.
Enjoy!

Is this a new thing for 2017+ models? I've never seen this in my 2015.

I've never seen that either on 15 or 17's.

Yep the snowflake shows up and a courtesy ding happens when it hits 37 f outside.

Maybe it's just a feature on the higher end cars? I just checked a 17' and its 23f outside. No snowflake, just the green temp light comes on. Maybe they don't have it in Canada cause it'd be on at least 8 months of the year.

I've owned my 2017 Mirage ES since last October, & I have never seen a * symbol on the dash. It's been a somewhat mild winter for Wisconsin, but not that mild!
My Subaru Forester indicates the temperature on the dash. Whenever the temperature drops to 37 degree, it flashes for a brief period of time. It's just a warning of possible freezing conditions.
I just assumed an outside temperature indicator is not part of a Mirage's base package. When a person pays less than $10,000 for a brand new car, I don't expect it to have everything.
