The above to suggestions are both good ideas. I may do that in the future. The engine still runs extremely well though Once it's fully warmed up.

maybe you guys can help me understand this since I don't know a lot about how engines operate, but when the ignition is turned on, but the engine not started, is oil primed at the top of the engine So there is some initial lubrication? I might sound like a total idiot asking that, but I figured it's worth asking. Reason I bring it up is, I've tried turning the ignition on and waiting 5 to 10 seconds before actually starting the engine and it seems like there is less clatter on start up. could just be my imagination though.

No, there is no priming done. The engine runs on whatever oil hasn't drained back until the oil pump gets pressure up to those places.

No priming at all. We all have the same issue. I don’t think it’s a contributor to esxcessive wear with many owners having 150k+ without problem. I switched to 5w30 with a Fram Ultra Filter and it’s been virtually eliminated. I’m going to try 5w20 next oil change to see if it changes any.

Thanks for the info, guys. I switched to the Fram filter last oil change. It does seem to help to a degree over the Mitsubishi filter, but unfortunately hasn't completely eliminated the problem. Using that damn Mitsubishi filter, it sounded like the engine was self-destructing at startup in cold weather. As for using thicker oil, if the problem is only at startup on a cold engine, how does 5w30 help over 5w20? They are the same cold viscosity (5w), but thicker at operating temperature.

I was going to switch to 5w20 to see if there were any mpg difference between the two grades.

I've noticed some cars sound like they have no oil in them right after changing the oil.

I usually have it done at my local Mitsu dealer or Walmart. I can't change my own oil where I live. Walmart uses the better FRAM filter. I've checked.

What does Walmart do wrong? I've not had any issues with them and have been using them on and off for years. I only go to my local Mitsu dealer when they offer a coupon, otherwise they're significantly more expensive and they use the crappier Mitsu filter.
