Mirage excluded from "most efficient" list... Spark beats it on a technicality

A few "most efficient for 2018" lists have been coming out, and I was surprised to see the Spark highlighted in the above example:

These are based on NRCAN figures, but Canada uses the same test methodology as the US EPA for vehicle class and fuel economy, so the list would be the same in both countries:

    first among traditionally powered models...

    • - Two-seater: Fiat 124 Spider
    • - Minicompact: MINI Cooper Convertible
    • - Subcompact: Chevrolet Spark
    • - Compact: Toyota Prius c
    • - Mid-size: Toyota Prius
    • - Full-size: Hyundai IONIQ Blue
    • - Wagon (small): Kia Niro FE
    • - Wagon (midsize): Toyota Prius v
    • - Pickup (small): Chevrolet Colorado Diesel and GMC Canyon Diesel
    • - Pickup(standard): Ford F-150
    • - Sport utility vehicle (small): Toyota RAV4 Hybrid
    • - Sport utility vehicle (standard): Lexus RX 450h
    • - Minivan: Chrysler Pacifica and Honda Odyssey

Spark CVT: 30 MPG city / 38 MPG hwy

Where the heck is the Mirage? It officially beats the Spark on both tests: 37 MPG city / 43 MPG hwy

I assume this is due to a technicality: the Mirage has more interior space than a Spark, so it doesn't "compete" in the same class, and therefore the Spark is listed as the winner and the Prius C beats the Mirage in the next class size.

    After reading the "article" lol
I found that Auto.com has the Toyota Prius C listed under this heading..

"NRC recognizes the most fuel-efficient new light-duty vehicles sold in the country, first among traditionally powered models.."

The Prius is obviously not "traditionally" powered as it's a hybrid so WTH?
Looking at Natural Resources Canada's list it looks like they have falsely listed Prius' (in fact all hybrids) economy numbers as if it runs on gas only and not gas/elec combined.
This shows up in the chart as very good numbers from a 1.5L gas engine. They never list or mention anything about the electric side of the car.
Auto.com simply reported the best looking numbers without the knowledge or care required to see their mistake.
Now anyone with a dung beetle's intelligence wouldn't unknowingly purchase a Prius thinking it's gas only powered.
But sadly most if not all will simply read the list and never know the Mirage (CVT) is in fact the most efficient "traditionally powered" (gas only) vehicle for sale in North America. Period.
the NRC data backs this up completely.
Conclusion.. The NRC has charted gas powered and gas/elec hybrid cars together within their classes. Though by simply listing cars as "efficient" they don't have to make the distinction.
The "class" distinction they do make, so the interior volume of the Mirage makes it a compact rather than subcompact with the Spark. These errors in combination have left the Mirage unmentioned where it should be wildly praised.
It then falls to Auto.com to accurately and without prejudice interpret the chart and report actual facts rather than simply spew their unresearched bias online. Sadly it appears they lack the intelligence, discipline or integrity to do so on their own.
I would encourage all who have a requisite facebook acct to leave a comment regarding their misleading article on Auto.com.
As a non facebook account holder I am summarily barred from commenting.
Might be worth mentioning that the Spark would never make the list if pitted against hybrids and in fact should not be listed at all considering as a sub-compact it could not match the efficiency of larger cars, ie Mirage.

Might be worth sending a message to them on this point.

They really seem to totally miss the word "traditional" in considering the candidates.

Where is this? I still see the Spark for the best subcompact.

I rented a '15 Spark, it felt cheap, like a for two with a back seat, poor mileage, bad ride.
