That lousy recycled steel! Mine must have been one of the few first generation Tacomas that wasn't bought back by Toyota but I still kept my eye on the frame and have done some welding on it last summer, I should have kept my Toyota Pickup though....

I'd like to keep mine "forever", or at least have the option. I'm very conscientious about maintenance, and have applied Krown/Rust-Chek a few times already. My last car I had for 8 years, and got the Mirage not because I needed to, but because it seemed to cost about the same (estimated extra repairs and gas of the old one), be more efficient, and likely a bit safer (though maybe not - more air bags, but a little lighter). There's nothing motivating me to sell the Mirage now, but if a similar car comes out in a few years with even better fuel efficiency, safety, and capacity I might consider it. I'd like a 60mpg Subaru Crosstrek or Suzuki Samurai, but that seems unlikely!

I had a 2000 Subaru Impreza for 8 years, until I slid into a guardrail and totaled it. I've owned my 2015 Mirage for over 3 years, and would like to at least keep it until it's paid off.

The longest I've ever owned a car is ~18 years. It is actually the first car I purchased, a 1993 Toyota Tercel. Sadly, its currently a lawn ornament as it isn't running. I have plans to get it running again, but I haven't put in the time.

Custom Mirage products: Cruise control kit, Glove box light, MAF sensor housing, Rear sway bar, Upper grill block

Current project: DIY Nitrous oxide setup for ~$100

Why let it rust? Are you doing anti-rust treatments?

It needs a new fuel pump. But, the fuel tank is pretty shot too, so I have one of those that I ordered for it... still not in it.

I have used rust-chek and Krown, but honestly I think sometimes rust is inevitable in places where aggressive salts/chemicals are used on the roads. It is very difficult to keep a car clean in those conditions. I hope for the best, but until they make an iron-free car . . .

As an aside, while aluminum doesn't "rust", it does oxidize and really isn't any better at resisting corrosion (and can be worse when next to steel - something about dissimilar metals and galvanic something . . .)
