Okay, so gadget inserted. Turned the car on ...and took my first drive.

Got an email right away...confirming the device was 'reporting'

Then after the trip I got a notification from the app. Open it and my driving was 'scored'
Scored on: braking, cornering, acceleration and speed. Also distance, etc...
    All captured.

I think this is fairly standard data that cars record today. This is probably the same execution that insurance by mile uses or Progressives driving tracker.

I will report again when I get some tax data to share specific for the Mirage

I wonder if it'll glitch out like our gps trackers do sometimes when I have a car inside the shop? I got a phone call one day asking why one of the mirages is doing 120kph across town in a residential area. It was actually on the hoist getting an oil change. Doesn't happen very often but when it does fail it does it well.

    Let's say we have two vehicles: a 2014 Mirage and a 2010 F350 with a V10.

The current gas tax in this state...second only to Pennsylvania...is $0.49/gallon. For the purposes of this discussion, let's say the Mirage gets 45 mpg and the F-series 12 mpg. Right now, the Mirage driver pays about $380 in gas taxes if they drive 35,000 miles per year ( 35,000 / 45 x $0.49 = $380). The F350 driver pays $1,430 per year under the same system (35,000 / 12 x $0.49 = $1,430). The guy with the truck has a vehicle that weighs 3 1/2 times more, has an engine that is five times more powerful, uses nearly three times as much fuel, and thus he pays nearly three times as much in taxes. As much as I hate taxes this seems perfectly reasonable to me.

Under the new system they both pay $840. Somebody want to explain to me again how this is "fair"? Does the government really expect the owners of fuel efficient vehicles to just quietly allow themselves to be COMPLETELY HOSED??

Maybe because the lawmakers and lobbyists are driving gas guzzlers?

Well considering the fact that Seattle has that sugary drink tax but exempts Starbucks, anything with milk, and juices which arent any better for you.... Don't expect any logic here either lol.

I'm glad the GPS portion was mentioned. I was just thinking of the retirement couple that takes off and cruises all around the lower 48. They return home to a $2,000 use bill, while driving on other states roads.

Okay my first update. You will note my poor mileage as well. Per mile tax is much higher for Mirage than gas tax.

With available technology i don't know why they need to charge all passenger vehicles at the same rate / mile. They could develop a formula based on mileage and consumption. As more people move to higher efficiency vehicles or as they decide they want more tax money they could just adjust the tax rate up across the board to compensate.
