^ I guess the assumption here is that "all cars are equal." So the concept of fair share is out the window when our Mirages don't produce much emissions.

If we're going to get taxed per mile why don't we just privatize roads already? Makes more sense to pay per mile to a company than to pay road tax that probably might not even go towards roads.

I think the proper way to do it would be to still charge tax at the pump but reimburse (or bill) the difference according to miles driven by residents within the state. Feds still got to get their tax money.

This Wikipedia link mentions a number of different approaches to this type of tax...

    Vehicle Miles Traveled Tax

Interesting that the CBO says that vehicle weight needs to be part of the tax formula to be fair...

"...the U.S. Congressional Budget Office issued a report comparing the relative merits of...a hypothetical vehicle miles traveled tax.

...taxes would have to be rated based on weight-per-axle to properly distribute wear-related costs of highway use.

That’s the way the Oregon pilot program works. You send in your fuel receipts to get refunded the gas tax at the pump and then are charged per mile travelled. For me anyway it would basically double the amount of “tax” that I would pay. Pure electric vehicles in Oregon do pay more in registration fees due to not using any gasoline. I agree with the CBO that weight needs to be a factor in taxation also. A light vehicle such as the Mirage is far less damaging to highways than a 8000 lb pickup. Commercial trucks have been paying per mile in Oregon for decades.

If I remember right from my engineering days, an 18 wheeler at 80,000 lbs is a million times more damaging to the roads than your average passenger car. They don't pay a million times more in taxes though.

I will post on this thread as the pilot rolls. Supposedly I will get a personal dashboard for my Mirage that shows an estimated tax from gas and a tax from mileage.

Doesn't wheel width have an impact on the weight distribution? I wonder how the stock Enasaves compare to vehicles with larger contact patch.

As if that would be taken into consideration.

Okay this was pretty quick. They sent me my tracker. This device will monitor all sorts of things, but ultimately report mileage I drive in WA. It has GPS so is suppose to exclude my trips over the border to OR.
