2018 Mirage ditches the cold air guide (added in 2017)?

Someone posted images of the Chicago Auto Show on EcoModder. They posted up an engine bay shot of the 2018 Mirage. It seems to be missing the air guide that was specifically added to the 2017 model to improve fuel economy.

Here is the 2018 from the auto show.

Here is the dealer training image that specifically tells why it was added.

Could it just have been removed for the show? Seems odd, and I do wonder if it was removed for the 2018 model year.

Directs cooler outside air into the intake air duct to improve fuel economy.
Hmmm...then why am I driving around with a Warm Air Intake?

    My '17 doesn't have one.
*unless it's under the rad support?*

I agree, it doesn't seem to make sense...

Very odd. It should be right in front of the intake air tube.

Where exactly is that piece supposed to go? I haven't noticed it either. I have a 17' in the air right now. I'll take another look.

found it. Attachment 11376 (Sorry it's upside down)If the car in the top pic had it installed you probably couldn't tell from that angle, it doesn't really stick out past the upper bar on the rad support.

Best mileage, and power, is obtained on a colder day when the AF charge will produce more power

That's interesting. I've heard the same thing.

I put a super-cheap warm air intake setup on my Speck and saw an improvement in fuel economy. I did this in cooler weather. In fact, several forum members here have done this.

A warmer air intake temperatures help reduce pumping losses. Also, warmer air helps fuel to vaporize. In colder temperatures fuel doesn't vaporize as easily which tends to lead to incomplete combustion, increasing fuel consumption. As an added benefit, the engine reaches it's operating temperature faster, where it runs most efficient.

Warm air intake temperatures also reduce the likelihood of icing at the throttle body. To avoid this icing, our Mirage design uses engine coolant to heat the throttle body.

These things are discussed in this thread: Warm Air Intake - Intercooler as an intake heater

I know the conventional wisdom favors cold air for increased oxygen density and power, but my time using a warm air intake proved a definite benefit. I suppose the answer to whether one should use an intake heater or cooler should depend on the outside air temperatures of where it is being used. Since Mitsubishi's design team has to take a broad variety of climates into account, the cooler approach prevailed, and then it didn't haha.

Wallythacker, you should try a brief experiment. Follow some of the advice in that thread and try a warm air intake on your Mirage, then let us know what you find. I doesn't have to be a permanent modification (can be easily reversed), doesn't have to cost much, and can provide fuel economy gains in your neck of the woods especially at this time of the year.

    What do you think?
