Airbag code B1558 - anyone with the right tool want to make some money?

Thanks to my dog I had to remove and completely strip my passenger seat down to the frame for a deep cleaning/soaking of the foam pads. After reassembly my airbag light is on and dealer reports code B1558 OCS Control Unit. I think I need to recalibrate the weight sensor.

Update- Mitsubishi airbag code B1558 indicates the occupant classification sensor (the thin pad in the passenger seat that detects your weight and whether or not someone is in the seat at all) has malfunctioned. The code is not related to recalibration of said sensor. The sensor is sold only as part of the entire seat and the dealer wanted nearly $1000 USD. Through LKQ Auto Dismantlers I was able to order a used seat (make sure it's listed "with airbag") for under $75. My existing seat with the replacement sensor is so far working and the airbag light turned itself off imediately.

    Problem solved.

If anyone else goes down this road just know the used seat sensor could also be bad but for $75 bucks compared to $1000......I'll take my chances.

Moral of the story - don't get your seat wet.

I believe there was a user that had to replace the passenger seat sensor cause his wet dog messed it up..

If it just needs to be reset one way that I worked for me with a Nissan was to turn the key to run 5-8 times without starting it and leave it at run for a minute or 2. Then magically light was out. I can't remember the exact sequence but that might be worth a try. If you have push to start I dunno how that'd work. Too fancy for me.

I've replaced drivers seats before without reprogramming anything. I wouldn't think removing and re installing should cause an issue unless you had the ignition on when the seat was out? or something maybe didn't get plugged back in?

Drove around with no passenger seat for a few days. I also have push start. Probably going to go to the dealer to pay a lot of money for a 15 min procedure.

Are you sure the occupancy sensor in the seat wasn't damaged? If it got wet, it might be toast. Do you know what that code (B1558) means?

This post has a video showing how the occupancy sensor is recalibrated in an Outlander.

Why not just replace the seat? I got a driver's seat at a yard recently for $65. And yeah...starting/driving any late model car with a missing or disconnected airbag is a no-no. The car's computer will punish you.

On older cars, simply reconnecting the airbag makes the light go out. But newer cars interpret the disruption as a possible intermittent fault that needs to be investigated, throw a light, then store a code.

Seats at my local junk yard are about 90 bucks plus the off chance that it would still need either sensor parts or dealer recalibration. Rather take my chance that all I need, based on the stored airbag code, is passenger seat weight recalibration. I just don't have the software tools to do it myself.

The weight sensor/pad was fully submerged durring cleaning but if I put about 20-30 pounds in the passenger seat the passenger airbag off light illuminates which to me indicates the weight sensing ability of the sensor is at least somewhat functional. The code appears to indicate that the sensor simply needs to be recalibrated to specific weights and then reset. Looks like I'm off to the dealer or hopefully a local specialist.

This stuff is good to know when I swap out my seat for 6 way driver, with heat. The passenger can bite it. Lol

If your car is still under warranty I'd try that road. Don't tell them about anything you've done like driving around with no pass seat, submerging an airbag sensor etc....They might cover it? Or tell you to pound sand and you need a new sensor/used seat and it has to be reprogrammed. Then charge you for an hour to diagnose it then another to calibrate the sensor after you replace the parts.
