Time for new brakes - what to get?

I hear the wear indicators on my brakes. I only have 24,000 miles but hear all the stories about the crappy brakes that came on these. Anyway, I was looking at the lifetime warranty ceramic brakes from Autozone. They have a set for $40 and a set for like $55 that includes all the hardware, etc. The car isn't that old so the original hardware might still work but figure since this has to be ordered in, I might just get the one with everything.

Oreilly has a similar set of options for a few dollars more. Are these any better?

Also, how are are the rotors on these? Should I change them or just use the originals?

How about the rear drums? How long do they hold up?

Personally, I'd order pads from rockauto. They have kits with hardware for about $20 plus shipping. I like the idea of the lifetime warranty, but with how much you actually change pads, I would just get a cheaper set. What happens if you don't like them, or they're noisy or something? I've had this happen (albeit rarely) before, and I've just gotten a different cheap set and I'm happy. IMO ceramic is definitely the way to go. I like to go with medium to higher quality pads, almost never the cheapest ones.

I am interested in what other people are using and un/happy with though.

I can vouch for the brakes from Rock Auto they cost me about $18 and are solid brakes.

I got Raybestos Element3 EHTs. They are a hybrid ceramic/metallic pad. I noticed a substantial improvement in braking performance over stock. They have held up pretty well, and also come with all the new hardware. I think I paid about $22 for them on Ebay and I'd buy them again in a second.

For the rears, I used Raybestos 1059PG shoes, mostly because I was so impressed with their replacement pads. My rear shoes lasted about 80,000 miles of pretty hard use, so at 24k I don't think you need to worry about them for a while.

I ordered ceramic pads and slotted rotors from R1 Concepts last year. Braking performance is alright, but I feel like I lost some of the initial bite of the stock brakes.

That's the downside of ceramics. The upside is long life and low dust.

I took off a wheel to do my brakes today and think they were simply dirty. There appears to be well over 50% of the pad thickness remaining next to the new ones I had on hand. The two slots for cooling, a wear indicator, or whatever are clearly visible and probably 2/3 of them remains compared to the new pads. Both the outer and inner pads looked good on that wheel so I slapped the wheel right back on without doing the brakes. I checked the other side and it basically looked the same so did the same there.

I took pictures and will post them later but think that there is still a lot of life in the factory pads.

That's good to hear! 24,000 miles seemed way early to need a brake job. Hopefully, you'll double that at least. Thanks for sharing! Also great to hear the suggestions of others on brake pad options.

Yeah, I thought that was pretty bad.

I know these cars are known for eating pads but thought this seemed bad. I guess they are just dirty but wanted to have new pads before I tore into it. I also didn't want to burn through my brakes. I ended up with the AutoZone premium option. I plan to just keep the pads. My GF has the same car after all so it is good to have them for one of us. She also has a few more miles so may be closer to needing them.

Here are the pics. It is funny but after viewing the pics, I now think that I have a problem. The noise I was hearing came from the driver side from what I can tell so that was the first wheel I took off. I took a photo of that side and didn't bother with the other since it looked so similar. I think I am seeing the pad material delaminating from the backing on the outer pad in the photo. I think I am going to head out with a work light and take that wheel off and get a closer look. It may also be distortion of my camera lens. It is a cell phone after all.

I think this is worth a second look based on the photo I just posted. I am really glad I took these. The pad is plenty thick but this looks wrong.
