Member test drive: Mirage LS 5-speed (Australia)

(Admin note: see this thread for the lead-up to this particular test drive... New Mirage here now in Australia.)

    ---

Well i had my first drive of the Mirage an LS manual

    • Motor sounds good not noisy at 100klm (60 mph) so thats great.
    • There is still a bit of road noise evan with our extra sound insulation in the Oz spec cars.
    • We had a lot of cross winds when i drove the car and it was realy good in this regard not much getting blown around at all.
    • Seems to perform well, brakes seem good, steering is rather lifeless. Wish the rev cut was about 1000rpm higher as the engine realy seems to get going than it just stops so quick grab a higher gear.

The fuel economy was not real good - avg about 6.4l/100klm (37 mpg US). I reset it on the highway doing 100klm/h and got 6l/100klm (39 mpg US) this is indicated on the dash readout. I don't know what tyre pressures were like and the car had only 33klm on it so hope they get better with some run in use. Temps were around 17 deg C (63 F).

Rev cut - so you were bumping into the rev limiter?

Re: the 6L/100 km (39 mpg US) at 100 km/h - you said it was really windy. Think that may have affected the result? Head/crosswind on that portion of your drive?

EDIT: it would be great if we could get some speed vs. fuel consumption data for the car. Something like I made for my Firefly/Metro 1.0L when I first got it:

So I was seeing 46.75 mpg (US) = 5.0 L/100 km at 100 km/h. This was before I started seriously modifying the car.

FYI That was on bi-directional averaged runs on a flat road in calm conditions, warm weather.

Yep i give it heaps from the last stop just to see what it was like HaHa

I had lots of cross wind no head wind and checked the economy each direction. I know its not very well checked was just interested to see what it was like .The economy readings may not be spot on as a lot of cars are not very accurate. And most cars get better after they have had a chance to run in and free up a little.

Not bad for a brand new car. I will bet after break-in, the car will do much, much better.

What did you think about the body roll issues that most reviewers seem to find annoying?

There was not a lot of body roll and i would say that must be becouse we get the anti roll bar fitted to our Mirage sold here in Australia. Some Australian's that test drove the Mirage some time before they were released for sale here complained about the body roll It would be great to find out if the anti roll bar is fitted to the Mirage sold in any other markets.

Great. I was wondering how much the addition of the front sway bar really helped out.

    Hey there Jamiec

Jocelyn's Kiwi model LS does not have an anti-roll bar and having just had my first decent drive, an anti-roll bar is something that I would very much like to fit.

May I trouble you to take a photo of the anti-roll bar and post it for me please ?

    Regards
    Flange

Flange if you go to the first post in this thread there is a link that has a pic of the sway bar as you scroll down that's all I can do for now as I do not own a Mirage.
