Locally, the Honda CVTs (on the 2003-2008 City / Jazz) are known to have problems with the start clutch after a few years. That said, ours has been fine so far, after 9 years and nearly 80,000 km.

That torque converter must take some load off that start clutch. Mitsu has already used this setup with the Lancer, I believe, though the Mirage is the first one to have a planetary gearset on it as well.

One good thing: this CVT7 has been in production by JATCO since 2009. This should be good for Mirage owners: ~4 years for testing & working out any bugs.

If it occurred during the warranty period, then there would be no cost for owners. In the post warranty period it's going to be an expensive headache. Thankfully, the JATCO didn't supply the Honda (maybe, Aisin?).

This makes me feel better about getting a CVT, but I'm going to try my hardest to get the manual if it really is better at city mpg as Darin showed in his test drives.

The Prius has a different type of the CVT (if you could call it as a CVT)
    The Prius "Continuously Variable Transmission"

Prius transmission works very differently. It uses only one gear ratio and utilise both electrical as ICE to power the gears. Electric generators don't need gears to spin. More info check http://eahart.com/prius/psd/
there's even sliders you can play with to understand more about the prius transmission.

Yeap. The Prius' CVT isn't exactly like the CVT stated on the head post.
Even the hybrid Chevrolet Volt has a very similar transmission (Sun and Planets).
