My at the time GF, had the good fortune of her father buying her a newish 1976 Colt. I liked it so much, that I bought a 1972 Dodge colt with a 5 speed. (No parental particaption on my end)

I owned my 1976 Dodge Colt station wagon - blue, with woodrgrain side panels - from 1983 to about 1986. I did a lot of work to that car to get (and keep) it running, and put a lot of miles on it. In the end, rust took it's toll. It made a pretty good first car, and influenced my decision to get my Mirage.
That was long ago. It didn't count for a loyalty discount.

My sister's first new car was an early 1980s Mitsubishi Colt. Prior to that she had an ancient Humber Vogue. The Colt was a 3-speed auto (a step up from the 2-speed auto in the Humber) so I don't know if the manual came with the dual range.
I bought a new Mitsubishi Mirage in 2000 when I was 35 years old. It was the first new car I had ever owned - prior to that I had had several brand new company cars in a previous job but obviously I didn't own them. The Mirage was by far the most fun-to-drive car that I had owned (I had only ever owned large sedans with 6 or 8 cylinders before that).
My previous Mirage was an influencing factor, but to be honest the purchase price I got on my new Mirage was the key factor.
In Australia only the 3-door hatch was called a Mirage. The longer body with a boot/trunk and 2 or 4 doors was called a Lancer.

I started working at a Chrysler dealer in 1978. Back in that era the Plymouth Arrow and the Sapparo were 2 great cars. I ended up buying a new 1982 Plymouth Champ for $4595. Reminds me of the Mirage in so many ways!!
