    -----

Surprise! The sedan version of the Mirage is making its North American debut in 9 days at the Montreal Auto Show. (Show website screen cap above; Jan. 16 is the media preview day.)

(Related thread: Attrage US rumor (turbo Mirage sedan coming to North America? )

The sedan looks to be following the same path that the Mirage hatchback took:

    1) Continental debut at the Montreal show, with the company saying they "may" bring the car here.
    2) The car then makes the rounds on the Canadian winter/spring auto show circuit, followed by...
    3) A big announcement at the New York show in April. (That's what they did with the hatch, but it's just my guess for the sedan.)

Regarding Canada, the official line is wishy-washy:

The company said it is studying the feasibility of adding G4 to the Mirage line-up, and your opinion will help them decide. The company will be asking show attendees to share thoughts on subcompact sedans. “We’ll use the information gathered by our teams in our decision to market the Mirage G4, or a variation on the G4 theme, in Canada,” the Japanese automaker said.

But the official word from Mitsu USA seems to be less about whether they're going to bring it, than when they're going to bring it:

”We are considering making it into a North American car but are still working on the timing of the launch,” wrote Mitsubishi manager of product communications, Roger Yasukawa.

All in all, it's a good sign. And I'm glad they're not calling it "Attrage", even unofficially.

Mitsu Canada hasn't posted a press release, but I expect they will tomorrow. I'll post back when they do.

UPDATE: here's the Mitsu Canada release. Nothing new, really:

Mitsubishi Motor Sales of Canada will unveil the Mirage G4 sedan at the Salon de l'auto international de Montreal

Mitsubishi Motor Sales of Canada will unveil the Mirage G4 sedan at the Salon de l'auto international de Montreal on Thursday, January 16. After Montreal, the Mirage G4 will continue making the rounds at most Canadian auto shows in 2014. We are studying the feasibility of adding G4 to the Mirage line-up and will be asking show attendees to share thoughts on subcompact sedans. We'll use the information gathered by our teams in our decision to market the Mirage G4, or a variation on the G4 theme, in Canada.

We hope to see you for the Mirage G4 debut in Montreal at 2:15 pm next Thursday at the Mitsubishi Motors booth, Level Two, Palais des congrès de Montréal.

I asked Mitsubishi Canada's Manager of P.R., John Arnone, to clarify what was meant by "variation on the G4 theme". Here's his reply:

Variation on the theme simply means consumer feedback may require us to reconsider how G4 looks, how it's equipped etc.
So don't be shy. Talk to Mitsu.

    =====

Mitsu Canada's press release from the Montreal show, Jan 16th:

    Mitsubishi Reveals Mirage G4 Sedan
Consumer Feedback to Influence Launch Plans

Montreal, Quebec (Jan. 16, 2014) – Mitsubishi Motor Sales of Canada (MMSCAN) will ask auto show visitors here and across Canada to offer opinions on the look, feel, cost and features of a new subcompact sedan before it gets the green-light for sale in Canada.

The Mirage G4, Mitsubishi’s Thailand-built four-door, three-cylinder sedan, will make its North American debut today at the 2014 Salon International de l’auto de Montreal. But company president and CEO, Kenichiro “Kenny” Yamamoto said its future availability in Canada will be based, in part, on consumer opinion.

“Our plan is to showcase the Mirage G4 and gauge what Canadians think of it and what they expect from subcompact sedans in general,” he said. “A solid business case for Mirage was confirmed by the successful 2013 launch of the Mirage hatchback model; with G4, we’re indicating our intention to grow the Mirage line up in Canada.”

When it was launched last September, the 2014 Mirage hatchback became MMSCAN’s first subcompact car. Since then, Mitsubishi dealerships have reported Mirage’s top fuel economy, low entry price and leading warranty are resonating well with customers.

MMSCAN’s vice president, Sales & Marketing, Tony Laframboise said: “We’ve built our brands around a competitive, value-for-money proposition; the Mirage G4 offers the right prerequisites, but let’s hear from consumers first.”

The Mirage G4 is currently sold in several Asian markets. The G4 on display in Montreal, and destined for most Canadian auto shows in 2014, features Mitsubishi’s 1.2-litre, in-line DOHC 12-valve MIVEC three-cylinder engine with a continually variable transmission.

Key G4 technical highlights include Anti-Lock Braking System, Electronic Brake Force Distribution, Keyless Operating System, power-side mirrors with integrated LED-type lamps and 15-inch alloy wheels with 185/55 R15 tires. Overall dimensions are 4,245 mm length, 1,670 mm width, 1,515 mm height and 2,550 mm wheelbase.

The Mirage G4 sedan is a sibling of the Mirage hatchback that is currently sold in Canada. The hatchback is rated at 4.4 L/100 km (64 mpg) in highway driving and is Canada’s most fuel efficient, gasoline-powered subcompact. With a starting price of $12,498, or just under $14,000 inclusive of PDI and shipping, Mirage offers incredible value backed by the best warranty anywhere.

Mirage hatchback is offered in two well-appointed trim levels, ES and SE; both include the standard five-speed manual transmission (5MT) or available Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT).

With an MSRP of $12,498 Mirage ES features seven standard airbags (dual front, front/rear side curtain impact, front-seat side impact and driver’s knee), a suite of safety features including Anti-Lock Braking System, Active Stability Control, Traction Control, Brake Override System, Brake Assist System and Electric Brake Force Distribution plus Mitsubishi’s Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution (RISE) Body System which combines an impact energy-absorbing front end with a high-rigidity cabin structure.

Also standard on Mirage ES P165/65 R14 all-season tires, front disc/rear drum brakes, 140-watt, four-speaker audio system with CD/MP3, halogen headlamps, folding and power side mirrors, intermittent wipers, power front windows, tilt steering, multi-function information display and 60/40 split folding rear seat.

On the naming front... not to get speculative, but Mitsu has trademarked "Attrage" in the U.S. http://tess2.uspto.gov/bin/showfield...802:ljw3p4.5.1

Id rather them call it Mirage. That way under sales its all as one total.

    Agreed.

Well the official "teaser" pic does have a "Mirage G4" badge on the trunk. So that's a positive sign.

Last year at this time, Mitsu still hadn't settled the naming issue for the hatchback. During the entire time it toured the Canadian auto show circuit, they showed it with no badge, and bizarrely referred to it only as "Mitsubishi's new small car". It wasn't until just before the New York show that they confirmed the name in Canada.

That's the big question. Turbo, anyone?

Turbo Mirage sedan rumor (coming to North America?)

It'll also be interesting to see the rear bumper of the car they show in Montreal. The hatchback made its debut with the U.S. and Canada-spec larger rear bumper (and rear/side reflectors) already fitted. I'm curious to see if the sedan's rear will also be different -- it would indicate production intent.

    Here's a Thia market Attrage's back end:

Can't say whether those tail lights also have integrated side reflectors, which are required here. The bumper already looks a bit beefier than the non-North American hatch's though, just going by the depth of the "shelf" portion below the bottom trunk lip -- but not as beefy as the North American hatchback bumper.

Also just realized: this will be the first ever 3-cylinder sedan sold in Canada/US. Am I wrong on that?

The Geo/Chevrolet Metro sedans had a 4-cylinder engine. (I believe I've seen one converted to the 3-cyl, but that doesn't count. )

EDIT: Yup, I'm wrong on that! The Fiesta 1.0t is available in the sedan, as of last month.

With how well the Mirage is selling, its no doubt they'd like to get the G4 over here too. Americans seem to like sedans better anyways.

Submitted the sedan news to Green Car Reports and Autoblog. GCR has already replied with thanks.

After the comment storm ignited by Autoblog's Mirage review, I'm pretty sure they'll jump at the chance for more Mirage comment bait.
