    Dripping Oil Drain Plug Fixed

The last time I went to change my oil, I noticed a small drip of oil coming from the drain plug. I didn't think much about it. I just changed the oil and forgot about it. I never saw a spot of oil under the car, and I never have to add oil between the 5,000 mile oil change interval I'm currently following.

Yesterday I changed my oil and noticed that the slight drip of oil was there on the plug again. After draining the oil and looking at the factory drain plug, I found that the washer on the OEM drain plug is really thin. Probably too thin to do anything meaningful. So I headed up to AutoZone and picked up a $4 assortment of M14 drain plug washers. While I was there, I saw that that they had a magnetic drain plug that fit the Mirage, so I went ahead and picked one up for $5.

So here's a look at the new and original drain plugs...

The assortment of washers had just about anything you would want to try: copper, nylon, steel, and steel with rubber. I decided on the steel with rubber washer (pictured below)...

Everything went together easily...and after 24 hours, no drip on the new plug.

The size of the drain plug is M14-1.50.
The size of the washer is M14.

Here are the AutoZone part numbers:

    Needa Parts M14-1.50 Magnetic Drain Plug...Part # 652166

    M14 Drain Plug Gasket Assortment...Part #653336

Note: I didn't like the gasket that came with the magnetic drain plug, so I used a washer from the gasket assortment.

...or get a Fumoto and never worry about removing the plug ever again.

Do you ever worry about the Fumoto valve opening accidently?

No. The lever has to be lifted and then turned. The lever is spring held in closed position. I have used the same Fumoto for the last 14 years, through 4 different vehicles. It has well over 500k miles on it. So no, I don't worry about it in the least. They do make safety clips in tandem with the valve if you're too worried.

Fumoto valves are awesome. Lots of fleets use them, construction equipment companies etc.. Quality product, not cheap but they are worth the $$. I had one in a previous vehicle and also one in a motorcycle. If you change your own oil it makes draining the oil a piece of cake and not messy.

Exactly. My Dad owns a diesel shop and always asks if customers will be willing to pay a little more for the first change to cover the valve and then reocurring changes are cheaper because of less labor. Plus too many places overtighten plugs on semi-trucks.

I have the Fumoto with nipple for hose attachment... No mess except for filter.

Fumoto has a new design that allows the installer to swivel the valve to better position it away from road hazards. It uses o-rings as seals. Once installed gaskets will no longer have to be replaced. In time, not having to buy drain plug gaskets will cover the cost for this valve.

Amazon: Fumoto F106SX M14-1.5 Sx Series Drain Valve

The hose & adapter kit is sold separately. Handy if you already have one for another vehicle. I plan on getting one of these valves.

Fumotos are awesome. I had one on my last Metro. You don't really have to worry about them accidentally opening.

Just last week I ordered a case of OEM Mitsubishi filters, and also had them send along a package of these...

When I changed the oil the other day I discovered that my drain plug didn't have a crush washer AT ALL. No drippage, but I thought there was one on there. Oh, well...there is now!

Interesting! Someone post a picture of one of these installed on a Mirage oil pan and I'll think about it. It looks pretty cool...

The washer is still in place on the drain plug pictured below. I guess it makes sense that it's a crush washer. It was crushed so flat on mine that I wasn't sure it was even there.

I throw the factory washer in the garbage on the first oil change and use a thicker aluminum one that we get from the dealer when we get oil filter. It's way to crapy to be used more than a few times.
