I would say 3 factors: Speed, continuous AC usage, and with a CVT not using cruise control. If you don't use it or don't have it the CVT will only drop down to the maximum overdrive ratio of .55 under absolute perfect conditions (no load or absolutely flat terrain with virtually zero throttle input). 60 mph is about 1900 rpm.

Sounds low even with AC. Those are hard city driving numbers for my 5 speed. Do you have non OEM tires, perhaps that are slightly larger than stock throwing the numbers off?

Perhaps your spark plugs are fouled?

If those numbers are correct something is out of whack.

Sounds spot on to me. I live in the Central Valley in California between LA and SF; where its crazy hot. Driving on the 99 freeway with the AC on blast, with CVT (DE model, no cruise control), and going about 75-80, I get about 36 MPG on average. When I slow down to 60-65, going down some country roads, my MPG jumps up to about 42.

    For comparison...

I took a 100 mile freeway round-trip trip today with 1 passenger. It was about 85 degrees and I needed to run the AC. My trip mileage was around 52 mpg.

    • My car is a 5-speed.
    • My front/rear alignment has been verified to be OK.
    • I rarely exceed 60mph/3000 RPMs (yeah...I know that's impossible on the 5 out there ).
    • I have 15" aftermarket wheels with low rolling resistance tires at 50psi.
    • My ScanGauge is set to read instaneous MPG (so I know when I'm in a good/bad mpg situation).
    • I use the AC...but never in "Auto" mode...and I usually turn it off climbing a grade that pulls my instantaneous MPG down significantly.

If I just set the cruise at 65-70 with the AC on "Auto", there's no doubt my mileage would be in the low 40s.

That seems ridiculously low if your car is completely stock. I have a basket rack and a load of other exterior parts and i get around 35 on the highway with many stop and go's.

Edit: i also have grippier tires.

Once I drove around 200 miles down the highway during a somewhat windy night and only got 33 mpg. No AC and cruise on. That said, the wind was shaking the car like a leaf.

I get between 40 - 45 mpg on the expressway here going between 60 - 70mph average speeds when it is not rush hour traffic. Thats in the Summer (now) with air conditioner (never on auto) on 75 degrees and fan speed 3 bars.

No tinted windows. So it is unusual to see your numbers because the CVT is really supposed to shine for Highway driving compared to a MT like mine

But I dont know how guys get 50 mpg+, I have only accomplished that maybe 2 or 3 times in my LIFE with this car. And I am hypermiling as best I can (But I dont go so far as to turn off the engine at a red light).

I just got home from a 6 hour drive from cedar point amusement park.

I went as fast as i felt i could get away with. 65 was pretty much a minimum and from indiana to ohio was basically 82-84mph the whole way, going With the flow of traffic. On the way there i got 46mpg and 45 on the way home. This is with the a/c on 2 bar fan speed the entire way

My car is a 5 speed, lowered, passenger mirror delete, driver mirror folded back, wiper arm mod and wiper block, grill block, and i have a lot of other things smoothed out. (no rear door handles, rear reflectors are covered for aero) as well as some weight i removed.

If your not happy with the mileage change it. I really think I'm getting a solid 5 mpg out of my mods. Over the life of the car it will pay out tremendously, not to mention I've been selling parts of my car off on ebay lmao

I guess it's all relative. If you have looked at the best mileage logs, there are a few people averaging 60+ mpg! And one of them is in Florida (3dplane). I would pay money to ride with that guy to see how he does it!

Let me give you an idea of how easy I drive. My last car (2009 Pontiac G5 XFE) was purchased new. I sold that car with 180,000 miles and it still had the original brakes on it...and there was still some meat on the pads/shoes.
