I'm curious how many are "out of warranty" and experiencing a starter grind. I've been looking into a used eBay starter 2015/2017.

I have heard of only one other case. 'Car Nut' bought his car as a salvage and said he had this issue. His car was an early-build 2014 model, manufactured before Mitsubishi had discovered the problem.
I'd throw an Ebay starter in yours and call it a day. You are probably due for one anyway.
Yeah for the cost I might as well. I'll probably hold off on the flywheel until the engine takes a turn for the worse.

Yeah I'm figuring the flywheel is boogered up as well. I'll know for sure when I replace the starter and spin the engine around to inspect it

There is a thread about this topic and Car Nut's Mirage. There are actually two 'different' starters for this car...one early, one late. They have different part numbers, and we don't know if one supercedes the other or if they are not interchangeable. It is entirely possible that the upgrade to the starter was a fix for the grinding.
Strangely, the manual and CVT cars use the same starter. I would try the later part number and see what happens. May solve your issue?

Here is the associated TSB that describes the problem:
