Mirage beats Corvette! (As the car with the highest U.S. fatality rate)

This newly released study paints a not-unsurprising picture of the deadliest cars in the U.S. by distance driven. The worst offenders are sub/compacts and sports/sporty cars.

It also lays out the most fatalities in the SUV/crossover class, and pickup truck class.

Would this have changed your decision to get a Mirage if you'd known? Not for me - I've always willingly driven cars on the "deathtrap" end of the scale, but I drive defensively regardless of what I'm in.

Is the study influenced the fact that the Mirage has fewer numbers sold and on the road?

Hmmm...I have owned 4 cars on that list. I must have a deathwish or something... :eek:

So many possible ways of looking at this.

You could argue that sub-compacts are generally driven by younger, less experienced drivers.

The Corvette, Challenger and 370Z are probably driven more by younger, more aggressive drivers.

There's probably no data on this, but it would be interesting to know what percentage of collisions involve this type of "overlap" contact. I will say that I am most nervous (and defensive) in my Mirage when driving on a 2-lane country road where this type of accident seems to be more common.

I was kinda thinking the same thing. Could it be Corvette drivers are just crashing into Mirages or the other way around? Maybe there's some new stupid fad challenge like eating laundry soap?

This could be the reason why the insurance for the Mirage is higher.

The list includes examples from both ends of the sales spectrum. Soul and Versa sedan sell in relatively high numbers. Some of the sports cars sell in lower numbers than the Mirage.

I can’t say the seats are the strongest I’ve ever seen. Attachment 14584Attachment 14585 I've seen some pretty strong seats that would hold together when being crushed with a front end loader. I don't think these ones would do the same. One of the hardest cars I remember squishing was an old Volvo but that's not really a big surprise.

Maybe instead of weighted shifter knobs, we should be looking at weighted bumpers and installing HANS devices...

That seat: collision damage, or hefty operator and over-exuberant seat-dancing?

An f150 tried humping the side of it. That was the passenger seat. Maybe their built to have a bunch of give?
