I have to know if anybody else has noticed LOUD valve noise on start-up or valve float at cruising speed?
I will get a sound clip up on youtube tomorrow morning of start-up noise.
Is it possible its the timing chain at cruising speed I am hearing?

I suspect the Mirage's engine has loud valves, especially running the thin 0W-20. After changing it to 10W-30, the clatter has quieted down considerably.
Could be time for a valve adjustment too.
I'll look for your sound clip.
I have about 5700 miles on the car, is it due for valve adjustment already?
Unlikely, but possible. Per the service schedule for 30,000 miles/24 months: "If valve noise increases, adjust valve clearance. This maintenance is not “scheduled” service, should be done any time."
No problem.
Yeah, my engine worked fine before the viscosity change, but it always seemed a little too clattery than what I expected it should be. The 10w-30 didn't quiet down the noise 'loudness' by much, but made the noise much smoother, so much so that I feel that the 3A92 was actually designed for 30 weight oil (and, according to my research, 30 is recommended for this engine pretty much everywhere in the world besides North America) ;)
Then again, your noise can be something completely different problem. Hard to say without hearing it.
Listen to Audi's 5cyl engines and the 5cyl in the Chevy small pickup. They're clunkier than most with even numbered cylinders.
Even the triumph 3cyl engines have a distinct sound compared to vtwin, v4, inline twin or inline for.
You have to determine the difference between unique engine sounds vs somethings wrong with it sounds.
Also make sure you have enough oil. If the oil isnt being circulated correctly at startup?
No valve noise at all on the Mirage I borrowed for 2 weeks. ~4k km on the odometer.
You mean the really loud tick tick tick noise?
That's the lifters. Mitsubishi's come from factory with that problem. They all end up getting it, oil is the issue.
Very old thread. I was going to post a new one on the same subject, but did a search prior to posting and found this. I have a 2015 Mirage purchased in March 2016. If the car sits over night or all day while I'm at work, it has the clattering sound, likely from somewhere in the the top end of the engine, for about 5 seconds after start. The oil doesn't appear to be low (tough to read because it's so clean). I've experienced this with much older cars, but never on a brand new one. I'm sure it's just because the oil has drained out of the head, so it's noisy until it's pumped back up there immediately after start.
I like the idea of the slightly heavier oil, but wonder if this would cause a hit in the mileage. Anyone have comments on that? Or how about the momentary clatter on start up if the car sits for about 8 hours? I'm not too concerned about this, but it would be interesting to know if this is typical of the car, or if it's sort of unique to mine. If the latter were the case, I might bring it up to the dealer, tho I'm sure they's say 'normal behavior'.
If the oil filter you are using doesn't have a anti drain back flap (such as the OEM filter or if it's not functioning properly) you'll get valve train noise until the oil pump refills the filter and pumps oil back through the system. I would change to a different brand of filter and I'm running 5-30 synthetic. Eliminated cold start up chatter and eliminated the "sewing machine" sound at operating temp. Sounds much better and no difference in fuel economy.
what kind of filters are you guys using that HAS the anti drainage valve? i believe the OEM one has it.
edit see below
I'm using a Hastings LF486 (long version of the recommended filter). I'm also running 5w-30 full synthetic Dexos1 certified oil.
I'm glad you've said that. Whilst I can't speak for the one fitted at the factory, when I last did an inbetween-service oil&filter change, I bought a genuine one and noted that whilst it was see through, there was an anti-drainback flap covering the filtration media; as there was on the one that came out, though the clear flap was now stained black with oil. Both had the same part number (1230A105)
What did surprise/concern me is how small the filter is. As soon as the warranty expires, it'll have a bigger unit installed, that's for sure!
Baldwin Filters are available in the UK. B1402 is the standard size filter and the B1431 is the longer version.

I use the Hastings LF486 (same manufacturer, different product line). which is the same thing as the Baldwin B1431.

That's good to know, Inuvik. Thank you! :)
I made a chart of Baldwin filters that should fit our cars. You can find it here.
i recant my statement. I cleaned out my garage and found my k@n wrench off in it's neat little box. i have an STP filter on which, now i remember, was free with a $18 gallon of "0-20 full synthetic for mpg vehicles" that i changed out right away after about 50 miles.
"k@n hp1010" it said right on the box it has the drainback valve. my receipt said i paid $11 from o rielys which is a lot for an oil filter in general.
Here are a couple of pics of the Hastings LF486 / Baldwin 1431 installed. Fits fine and it's way easier to get ahold of the filter for removal.

Have valve train noise under load.
New Mirage Juro 3, about 3500 miles, unleaded petrol 95 RON from same petrol station (Tesco). Does it worth to try another petrol, 97/98 RON?
andy78 take back to dealer for valve adjustment.
I understand there is no valve adjustment. I also understand that fuel choice will not affect this.
Please forgive my brief post. I'm pretty sure there is a more thorough explanation in this thread. Some Forum members have noticed valve noise improvement with a slightly thicker engine oil.
Try this thread: Valve adjustment info found under hood
in the service manual, it says to check it. adjustments of any sort before 12,000 miles is covered by warranty.
if my valves were rattling at any point during loaded operation, i know with 3500 miles, ide be in the dealer
service manual section 11a, shows entire process... looks like a pita..:cower:

I was wondering because I don't own a mirage yet, what oil weight is listed in the manual? Is 5w-30 "allowed" to be an alternative? And what's this "valve adjustment" thing I read about. I mean is this necessary? I haven't heard anyone adjusting valves since I was a kid in the 80's and the kids down the street would be adjusting valves in there old clunkers...
I use 5w-20, helps with initial chatter. 0w-20 is recommended. Keep in mind, other grades are used in other countries. Really, 5w-30 will be fine.
The repair manual has a section on valve clearance inspection and adjustment.
Thanks for the info!
I was wondering if the engine developed a problem and you changed your own oil when recommended, (or earlier), would the dealer deny warranty work because they didn't change it? (if it was an internal engine issue)
Nope.. never a problem. Just like 5w-20. There are laws protecting people who do their own maintenance with proper documentation. I'd like them to try to one up me.
good to know, thanks.
they would probably say "the manual says 5-20, you were using 5-30."
That's when you can show them the entry in the manual that shows the range of motor oil viscosity that can be run in the 3A92. What's more important is that the motor oil meets ILSAC specifications.
