New iPhone Now Apple Car Play doesn't work

I recently upgraded to a iPhone 12. My 2018 Mirage SE system does not want to play nicely with the new phone. The car has been turning on and off the bluetooth. When hooked up to apple car play, the phone drops calls from car play (but the phone is still connected to the call), The phone just does not seem to want to work well with my car at all. Do I need a system update? How do I do that? My car is almost out of warranty (I have 54,000 miles on it). The Apple car play was working perfectly with my iPhone 7, and now not at all. Since I drive a lot, I really need it to work properly.
