Lol, Doug Demuro. I've watched tons of his videos. Hes pretty funny, and basically makes a living making fun of cars. It doesn't matter if its a $10k Mirage, or $100k+ supercar, he makes fun of them all.
That being said he does makes numerous errors in the video about Mirage features and specs, not knowing the random changes from year to year, etc.
In the first half, his negatives comments are basically why I like the car. Missing useless plastic cover bits? Great! Less weight.
On the driving characteristics, I agree on the handling. It could use some help.
You can see your foot through the engine compartment - not so in the Hellcat.
Ok.
I just can't stand watching his reviews for some reason. A good amount of car friends can't either. Not sure why. Just cant watch any of his reviews. lol. I do remember watching his much
From a friend: "He seems like someone who doesn't understand driving or cars in general and just watched a YouTube review of the car he is about to review."
Other than that, I don't think it's the 'worse new car you can buy'.
Too bad he did not review the standard features well enough to know it has a USB chord in the glovebox. At least he could have made fun of it, instead of making fun of not being equipped with one.
Huh.. actually, the one thing I learned; "it does not have a steering wheel lock". I thought this was required?
Ha! I've been waiting for Demuro or Regular Car Reviews to get a Mirage.
Watching it now...

Oh, and don't forget there's a written version of this review by Demuro as well:
The Mitsubishi Mirage Is Better Than Nothing
Main thought from his driving impressions: you really have to keep in mind the cars he's used to driving week after week. Just look at his video list.
Of COURSE a Mirage is going to come off badly by comparison.
He's plain wrong about the bumps. Maybe not the sound of the tires/suspension, but the feel: The 2014/15 Mirages soak up big bumps like freakin' champs. They ride like subcompact 1970's Cadillacs.
I have to give him credit for his conclusion though: He nails it that some people need or just want a cheap, reliable, efficient car with a huge warranty.
But he has no reason to question the Mirage's reliability as his very last point. (Actually he questions all Mitsubishis.) That's plain conjecture, and it's completely unprofessional. (Not that he tries to sell himself as Consumer Reports .)
Interesting that almost every comment is in support of our little car. Doug is missing the point, this car is a modern day Beetle in that it is a very convincing value for the average person.
Not sure why he is reviewing a two-year-old used Mirage when he could pretty easily get his hands on a new-and-improved '18. But I guess he reviews all kinds of stuff.
I put my $0.02 worth in under the comments!
And they've apparently put him on the defensive. Last night he changed his first pinned comment under the video to read:
View/add to comments below his video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5aCsNs3eYTEQuote:
"Watch from 18:00 before complaining about how offended you are that I don't "understand" this car."
Lots of comments on the written version of the review too: https://www.autotrader.com/car-video...nothing-272137
It's amazing the amount of backlash against Mr. DeMuro this review is creating. Over 600,000 views in TWO DAYS. Over 11,000 comments, most of which are from people around the world and are along the lines of, "I live in Chile and the Mirage is considered a rather luxurious car here. F@ck you!"
I think it's all very, very funny!:D
My favorite comment, from a viewer simply known as "Mark". I repost it here because it will likely be un-findable in a few hours:
"I hate-watched this video knowing that it was being reviewed by some guy who makes his living driving fancy shmancy zoom-zoom penile-envy cockrockets. Of course DD hates this car. It offends him that cars could possibly be liked solely for cheap reliable fuel-effecient transportation. Also, I am not POOR and I own a 2015 Mirage. There is a human charm to vehicles like this. Anyone who's driven around the British Isles is a Micra, a Corsa, or a Ka knows this. Anyone who prefers an old small cottage to a McMansion knows this. I personally would rather own three Mirages than one f**king F-150 Raptor or whatever-ST. So stick the Mirage hate up your butt good sir."
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D
He was fair to our vehicle towards the end around the 18 minute mark. This car is for cheap, reliable transportation. It's not ment to be a head turner or anything like that.
MercyMirage, I moved your thread into one we already had started on the topic.
One review retard on utube could not shut up about the Mirage being stuck in the 90's because of the equipment installed.
I don't remember seeing traction control, stability control, ABS, bluetooth or MP3 capability on any 90's car at any price.
So the guy is an idiot. Plus the base Spark comes with manual windows (all four!) and those weird little joysticks attached to each mirror. That equipment is from the 80's , nevermind the 90's as some commenter posted.
I replied mentioning this guy doesn't no jack about the mirage or it's competition.
More on Reddit:
Following on from the Doug Mirage review. If you want a reliable car for that kind of money and aren't an enthusiast, why would anyone not just buy a 3-5 year old Corolla instead?
Where DeMuro actually defends the Mirage:
Quote:
A lot of very savvy car enthusiasts say things like 'Why don't you just buy a used Civic?' Well, because not every used Civic is good. The people buying Mirages bought a used Civic once, and they don't know much about cars so a few months later the timing belt snapped, and they were screwed.
Not everyone is smart enough to know which used Civic to buy, or which used Corolla, or to spot the ones where the exhaust is held on with zip-ties or whatever. And a lot of people are scared of being that person who gets the unreliable Corolla or the unreliable Civic, maybe because it has actually happened to them before.
I've often felt this is the biggest issue where car enthusiasts lack perspective -- car enthusiasts know how to spot these issues, and it's so ingrained in us that we almost can't believe there are people out there who don't realize if you mash the brakes on a test drive and the car and it shakes, it may need new pads and rotors. But those people exist, and they're not idiots, they just don't know much about cars. Which is fine.
By buying a Mirage, you get the comfort of knowing you have a new vehicle (a big deal) with a long warranty (a big deal). Plus, it's often difficult to finance older used cars, whereas Mitsubishi would finance a wombat if it walked into a showroom.
DeMuro almost had me here...right up until the last half of the last sentence.
That half a sentence isn't entirely untrue, it's just entirely untrue in 2017. Back in the late 1990s Mitsubishi ran a promotion where you could walk into a dealership and drive out in a new car with "Zero Down, Zero Interest, and Zero Payments for a Year".
Sounds great, right? Well, it brought lots of people into Mitsubishi dealerships. Even today you hear snarky car commentators saying, "Mitsubishi sold 300,000 cars a year in 2000...what happened??" They sold that many cars because of financing offers like this!
The problem, as Mitsubishi Motors North America found out, was that not everyone was as credit-worthy as they assumed. People were faced with that first payment a year in and the new car smell was gone, they had decided they didn't like the car anymore, didn't need the car anymore, their financial situation had changed, whatever. People defaulted by the tens of thousands. This left Mitsubishi with thousands and thousands of repossessed year-old cars with 20,000-30,000 miles on them that were worth nowhere near what was loaned on them. In fact, Mitsubishi had not gotten one thin dime for them yet. It was so bad that the mother company, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, had to give a major financial bailout to MMNA. Truth be told, the company has never really recovered in the US.
Believe me, Mitsubishi learned their lesson here. They won't throw a $15,000 car loan at anyone who can fog up a mirror anymore. And despite what Mr. DeMuro wants to think this is not why the Mirage is selling as well as it is.
When I went to buy my Mirage in late '14 I applied for financing through Mitsubishi. My credit was...'meh'. Not good, not bad. They turned me down. Three months later my girlfriend also bought one and also tried to finance through Mitsubishi. Her credit was pretty good...think 730-ish. We were both surprised when they turned her down, too.
I urge Mr Demuro to send someone with less-than-stellar credit into a Mitsubishi dealership just to see if they walk out with factory financing. They won't.
I just couldn't believe he called the mirage the worst car when he had over 10k in warranty repairs on his Land Rover. It literally broke down while filing it about another issue. I am driving one of the cheapest new cars in America and the only real issue I've had is a defective starter and a oil filter installed by Godzilla.
Edit: in 60,000 miles Dougs Range Rover had $16,873 in warranty work done. What a money pit.
I couldn't watch the whole thing because I can't sit through it.
Here's the bottom line about our cars in my opinion:
- They're minimalist vehicles that get great mileage, costs little to buy and operate, and have a great warranty.
- They're slow and noisy compared to most other cars out there.
- They're not for everyone.
And I'll tell you what: Mitsubishi has sold over 21,000 of these vehicles in 2017. That's more than:
-Chevy Spark
- Fiat 500
- Smart Fortwo
- Toyota Yaris Liftback
- Kia Rio
- Many others!
The bottom line for me is this: I don't care what others think. I really like my Mirage. It's different. It's fun. It's inexpensive. It's frugal. It's the right car for me, no matter what people say.
Video is past 900,000 views in one week. I'm surprised it's doing so well.

Holy cow. Mitsubishi must be pissed!

After having several people forward me the DeMuro review of the Mirage, I figured I'd write my two cents on Subcompact Culture. Have a look.

Amazing: the video is now past 1 million views & 14,304 Comments.
Does yours have a traditional ignition key?
Aha. It may be just the cars with push-button start which don't have the steering lock.
the guy is clueless about real world mileage. My brother drives a Fit and I used to own two of them. There is absolutely not a "3 mpg difference" between them, although the Fit can get decent highway mileage.
The mirage dominates in overall MPG.
I'm subscribed to Doug's YouTube channel and watch most of his videos as they're released. When I saw the thumbnail image of the Mirage on his channel I got all excited. I totally expected he'd trash the car, which he did. It annoyed me that he complained about the dumbest little things on such an inexpensive car, such as exposed hardware in obscure areas and the fact that you can see the ground thru the engine compartment. Seriously, Doug? He picks on a lot of cars, usually deservedly so. I thought he was too harsh on the cheapest car sold in America. Objectively compared against other subcompact, he could have pointed out the soft ride, comfy seat, auto climate control, MPGs and other positive traits. I think that's why he got so much hate in the comments.
^ Exactly. He complained about a cheap car having cost-cutting materials & build techniques. Duh!
EXACTLY! I just sold my 1969 VW bug after 10 years of driving it, working on it and enjoying it......Our little Mirage is the modern equivalent.....Except that it does almost everything better than the Beetle with its 1930's technology, except off roading and deep snow.
Welcome to the forum! Lots of good info and people here.
