WOW This is incredible! Thank you so much! Kats 11812 engine block heater from Napa!
I searched Napa online with no luck finding this part :(
Great info, thanks!
I added this to the Mods & DIY list.
Nice video. I didn't realize it was possible to see the install location much less take a video of it. Thanks!
Thanks. It's underneath, but there's surprisingly lots of room in the front next to the radiator. And to see it, you have to line yourself up juuuuuuust right. :)
It was 70 last Saturday when I shot that. Due to lovely Ohio weather, it was 29 degrees out this morning, so I thought I'd give the heater a shot. It wasn't that cold, and I couldn't find my timer, so I plugged it in for just under an hour. The very first reading from the ScanGauge said intake air temp was 48, and the water temp was at 80. I had warm air blowing in 1/4 mile, low temp light off in 3/4 mile. I measured it with my Kill-A-Watt, and it's right at 400 watts, meaning that quick warm up only cost around 3-4 cents (1 hour , 400 watts at 7 cents per kwh). I'd say that's worth it.
I just installed mine and it was very easy thanks to this video. Did not test it yet. Got mine from Autozone.
Just wondering how effective folks found this heater to be? Would like to hear from those in really cold areas, like -10 F etc. The guys at NAPA have never seen one like this before and neither have I. When it gets really cold, I was just wondering whether the lack of direct contact with the antifreeze might hurt the effectiveness of the heater. I'd rather find out now than at 4 in the morning on a winter work day.
Also what would be the difference in different brands of di-electric silicon lubes, cheaper vs the more expensive kind?
It hasn't gotten that cold here yet, but I will certainly update when it does. So far it is noticeable though. I do not believe you would recognize any difference between NAPA SIL GLYDE and G624.
My Toyota Matrix and Prius both have a cartridge heater like this and it works fine.
I was in a rush this morning, and forgot to unplug my block heater from the extension cord. Oops! Didn't think about it until halfway to work. I've got the cord coming out the front intake, zip-tied to the plastic. No damage at all, thankfully! My driveway is a slight incline, I can roll down just fine without reverse. I suppose at slow speed it's not a big deal, but as soon as I realized I forgot to unplug, it was definitely a slight moment of panic.
