Hoowee it's cold! Temperatures in the single digits this past week. Fuel economy stinks but it sure beats walking. I think I'll be lucky to average 40 mpg this tank.

The Dunlop Wintermaxx tires are holding up fine - although we haven't had enough snowfall to really test them out.

The TPMS warning light doesn't bother me as much as I thought it would.

Also, the block heater has been warming things up nicely. I'm seeing coolant temps consistently in the 80℉ range with about 90 minutes of use. My shabby warm air intake is running about 20℉ - to 30℉ above outside air temps. It's not as fancy as Top_Fuel's intake. Every little bit helps.

The problem is, with my relatively short commute to work Speck's coolant has been running around 150℉ - 160℉. I ought - need? - to get a nice grill block going. Heck, I'm even tempted to put cardboard across the radiator.

Hope everyone is doing well in this weather.

    Cheers.

A grill block will definitely help, especially if you do any higher speed travel.
Custom Mirage products: Cruise control kit, Glove box light, MAF sensor housing, Rear sway bar, Upper grill block

Current project: DIY Nitrous oxide setup for ~$100

I just scheduled a service appointment for my airbag recall in less than an hour. I just took off my warm air intake hose, restored the resonator and am now chowing down my soup lunch mmm.

I haven’t done that recall yet. I just don’t feel like blowing an ENTIRE day to drive the 450 mile round trip to my nearest dealer.

Recall is done. It took longer than I wished for but there were some circumstances that contributed.

    1. My battery had leaked acid - noticeable by the corroded battery holder on top. That battery was replaced and a new holder will be ordered.

    2. Apparently there was only one tech and a bunch of customers. Poor guy - I'll bet he was as busy as a one-armed wallpaper hanger. AND he was washing cars too. They handled things though.

Speck got washed, so that's nice. Then I drove and it got another salt-spray shower. Ick.

I'm thankful for my dealership - Sunnyside Mitsubishi. They continue to take care of me as a customer.

At least the temperatures warmed above freezing, and the sun was shining. In Cleveland, that's nice.

Another fill-up report. Interestingly, I noticed something funny at the pump. I usually buy 87 octane Amoco gas at BP. This time I noticed the 89 octane was the same price as the 87. So Speck got the better stuff this time.

I'm not sure what difference it'll make, if any. It'll be hard to tell as temperature has such an affect on the fuel consumption and all. Since my service appointment I haven't put the warm air intake back on. Today I put on a grill block for both the lower grill and the mail slot. So that's a lot of variables to consider beyond just the different octane fuel. I'll continue monitoring the coolant temperature as usual.

    Cheers!

What did you use to block your grill?

I'm noticing that at highway speeds (≅60 mph) the radiator cooling fan starts to cycle, as I notice my coolant temperature reach 221℉ then drop down to 203℉, then climb back up. I only see this when I travel at highway speeds, and I don't usually get on highways.

I noticed this on a trip I took yesterday afternoon. I pulled over and removed my block of foam for the mail slot, which of course provided some cooling. The fan operated less, but still operated.

Does anyone else notice this with their grill block?

A grill shutter would help this. An automated grill shutter would be better.

You're just past the edge of too much grille blockage! (I'm in the same position with my winter beater 2000 Chevrolet Metro -- fine on the secondary highways, fan cycles on the freeway).

A variable block would be ideal.

I'd open more to ensure the fan isn't cycling. It's a little counterproductive: burning gasoline to power the fan because of the fuel-saving grille block.

Also, arguable that it stresses the cooling system slightly more than not letting it get that hot.
