Fuel smell when idling. Small leak of Fuel Pump, line, or leave it?

When I'm idling my Mirage I get the smell of gas in the cabin.

Not every time, but sometimes; and it's gross. It's like not "a lot" but it's bad enough.

100% goes away when you get to speed and are cruising around.

Mechanic says its a small leak from the fuel pump. Maybe fuel line, if those are connected. I'm not a mechanic eh.

So I have been living with this pungent little issue, but thinking of replacing the pump and/or fuel line. He says its gonna be kinda expensive, so he would leave it.

Anyone else had similar issue with their Mirage? What did you do?

My car is the 2014 ES with 186,000 kms. I think that's 115k miles.

*Edit sorry, gas smell, not exhaust fumes smell.

Your mechanic doesn't know where the leak is, so shouldn't be recommending to leave it (as it could be a potential fire hazard). Yet the mechanic knows it will be expensive - I wouldn't trust that mechanic

Says it's around the fuel pump, but it's very very small. I wonder if anyone else had this fail.

I know for sure there at least one person on the forum that’s had an evap leak that was caused by the top of the fuel pump housing cracking. Fix was replace fuel pump assembly. Or at least the housing.

It’s not a hard job and doesn’t take long to replace, maybe 30 mins tops? I can’t see used ones being hard to find or expensive.

I wonder if the incident with the front collision affected the tank/pump as it passed under the car.

This has been going on for a few months, predates that recent accident.

I'll get it fixed soon. Thanks for the information everyone

I had my car looked at again at another place, and they say the bad smell is from my exhaust system.

So they did a repair of sections of the lower exhaust with new tubing. So far so good.

I was thinking of this thread from Doax...

Fixing a P0442 code (small evap leak -fuel pump housing crack)
