Larger 15" Tires for Stock Wheels

Has anyone run a larger tire than the 175/55R15 tires found on the stock wheels? If so, do you have a picture you could show me with a larger tire? I don't care about the speedo being off a hair or fuel economy hit, just seems my G4 needs a larger tire when it's time to replace them.

185/55r15 (23") seems to be the most common swap for the 175/55r15 (22.6"). The +1.8% variance in diameter would probably make your speedometer more accurate than the factory size.

175/55r15 is not a popular size in the States, & Discount Tire Direct only has 7 tire options (none under $100/tire).

Whereas they have 37 tire options (some under $100) for the 185/55r15.

195/55r15 (22.7") would be basically the same diameter as the factory tires, but I haven't seen a lot clearance issue discussion for the G4. Does a G4 seem to have more tire clearance than the hatchback?

That's what I would find out before going wider than 185.

I am not speaking from personal experience with 15" tires. So I hope others chime in, too!

I see the 185 is an easier tire to get.

I ran 185-55-15s on 6.5" wide aftermarket wheels with no problem. They would probably be fine on 5.5" wide wheels. They might look a little fat on 4.5" wide wheels...but I bet they would still work. Speedometer error with 185-55-15s is almost nothing.

I am now running 185-60-15s on 6.5" wide wheels. These also fit on a Mirage with no problems. At 3000 RPMS (60mph indicated on the speedometer) I am running about 63-64mph on GPS.

I prefer 185-60 instead of 185-55 because the 60 series tire is slightly taller, cheaper, and easier to find. When I look on Tirerack.com, there are 36 tires available as a 185-60-15 vs 19 in size 185-55-16.

Johnny - It's funny, I've grown to love that skinny tucked-in kind of feeble look to these wheels and tires. It's grown on me a lot. I am slightly tempted to go even skinnier. But to each his own...

I would love nothing more than to run a tire the size of the spare. It would be an amazing winter beast and should provide insane LRR stats. But.....I see 185/55 in my future, now Johnny mentioned 185/60 have more choices and likely better prices I see that's probably my future tire. I see the Mazda 2 runs 185/55-15 on alloys as factory. Very nice of them. You could go skinnier to see if you can bump up the MPG. Unlike screwing around trying to keys working tire issues on a MIrage seem trivial.

Wally - I have a thread going about trying to go to an even skinnier tire. So I won't go into it much. Suffice it to say, options are limited.

I don't think the G4 uses the same rims as the Mirage. I bought a pair of Dirk's factory steel rims from his wife's G4 thinking they would be 14" x 4.5", but they were 14" x 5" steel rims. It looks like a G4 with 175/55r15 tires may even have 15" x 5.5" rims. A 5.5" wide rim is good for widths of 165-195. Thus, it would be perfect for 185 wide tires.

Quoting what I could find online below for a G4

    OE 165/65R14 79S 5Jx14 ET38
    OE 175/55R15 77V 5.5Jx15 ET38

Interesting that G4 wheels are 14x5. I didn't know there was a difference between G4 and Mirage wheels.

I know your looking for 15"...but we bought a used Mirage that came with 185/65R14's. They filled the wheel wells much better than the stock tires. I didn't drive it to see if it rubbed at all but they appeared to have been on the car for a while.

Are you looking to go taller, wider or both? If just taller, what about a 165/65r15? They're an odd size but they do make them. A bit taller but a hair narrower than the 175/55r15
