Thread: Scratch in interior's cheap plastic :(

Scratch in interior's cheap plastic :(

If there's one thing I don't like of cars of nowadays it's the cheap plastics used for the interiors.

Always thought only cheap cars used this kind, but have learned since that much more expensive cars use this as well.

Still, I don't see anyone complaining about it here. Am I really the only clumsy member here that manages to produce scratches on their precious Mirage/Space Stars, like this:

..or do others just continue with their lives after a scratch like this?

My dealer already said they can't do anything.

Plastic is cheap & light. How much extra are you willing to pay for a nicer interior?

I bought a Mirage because it was cheap. Anything that would make the car more expensive would make the car less appealing to me.

Having said that, I wish the rear seats flipped forward after folding them down (leaving a flat floor space in the rear). As far as the interior goes, I don't mind it. Scratches add character.

There is probably nothing to repair it like it was.
Some have improved scratched plastic with a hot air gun, but you need experience so to not make it worse it in the attempt.

I don’t know what a dealer would be expected to do unless they did it.

I get what you’re saying there. In end of the day, it is a subcompact economy car. Mine has some scratches like yours already and frankly I don’t mind them especially paying for way less than today price. I see scratches as one of it characters of Mirage. C-H-E-A-P!

Now if there are scratches like yours on a brand new $30k+ vehicle like the Accord, Broncos, Corvette, M5, or GR86 then I’ll be super anal about it, and I’m glad I’m not like that person.

To me, Mark’s perspective on “learn to appreciate what you have now” definitely goes a long way as I still have an itch for another car like Mirage in hatchback form!

Yeah tbh these sorts of scuffs and surface wear elements are just things I expect with every car I've ever had.

I will say, I had to buy a lawnmower yesterday and I used my mirage to pick it up. It was new in box of course, but even then, I was real nervous about scuffing my interior loading this in! It was a 21" self propelled mower, weighed about 100 lbs and was I wanna say about 15-16 cubic feet. Plenty of space with the seats down, but just awkward to push it in. Fortunately I didn't seem to scuff anything but I was certain I was going to!

Guitar is my real passion outside of what I do for my day job, and I'll say with guitars, when I get a new one, there is always that feeling of complete horror when the first nick gets in one. But it is almost good when that happens: no more worrying about it being mint condition.

The day after I picked up my brand new mirage, I picked up a rescue Rottweiler. It was not at all planned, so I just stuffed that wild beast, Rolo the Rottweiler in there, with my tires, luggage and bunch of other stuff. Then I drove 600 km home, hoping that the uncultured animal won't punch holes in my summer tires while I'm not looking. Tires were ok, but he chewed one of the rear shelf pegs (shelf still stays in place, but just). On another occasion, he started chewing off my seat belt - managed to get through about 1/4 inch of it. So scratches like the one OP showed are nothing big, they just add character.

I'm constantly in my Mirage, it's a 2021 and it's scratched to hell. It's the symbol of a good workhorse. These are $hitboxes. I'm happy the interior is 100% cheap recycled plastic. It's tough and it's easy to clean. Where I live the extreme heat can melt luxury interiors. The interior plastic can take the heat.

Maybe this will make the op feel a little better. I bought this thing new in 2020. I paid 20x what I paid for my Mirage. Things escalated quickly. It gets beaten like a red-headed stepchild even though it's the most expensive thing I own with an engine lol.
I'll have to post a more recent pic. Most of the paint is rubbed off the front end from my last trip spending 3 days riding overgrown unused trails. It's only stuff, as long as it still works I'm happy.

Dunno if it's required by law, but my dealer installed it both in my 2018 and my 2023 Space Star.

I put it back in the holder
