    ATF - Automatic Transmission Fluid

NOT RECOMMENDED FOR HYBRID CVT UNITS AND CONVENTIONAL AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS

Ford had very simple procedures as the car was close to leaving the line. One of the last steps was adding fluids, antifreeze, oil, 2 Imp gal gas, washer fluid. There were simple effective checks for leaks. Any defects and the vehicle was shunted to the side to be manually reworked by the weekend crew. It was THE desired job in the plant. They only worked Sat & Sun, got 2x pay on Sat and 2.5x pay on Sun. Salaried staff hated supervising these guys as they got nothing to be there on rotation. I got seconded a couple times to supervise. WTF did I know about supervising union guys?

7, the structural foam thing was in infancy when I left Ford. It was nothing but a headache, the foam was either mush or brittle and very hydroscopic.

All this CVT stuff bends my brain. As an avid sledder I was dealing with CVT systems from age 11 or so. I learned early how to change the belts, drive to maximize belt life, rebuild clutches and drive systems, performance tune the systems, lots of fun. My high point was getting a whole season, about 6,000km from 1 belt on my 200 hp 3 cyl, Thundercat sled.

What do you do to maximize the life of those sled CVTs? I mean outside of maintenance. What driving techniques do you use? I have an ATV with a CVT. I could adopt your techniques.

I think what happened to you OP is what happened to my wife's 2017 G4, except a replaced engine was the culprit. When we bought it used in 2019 I took it in to get its 1st cvt fluid change at a, different from where we bought it, Mitsu dealer. The service tech said we didn't need to do it because the fluid and recently been done a week before we bought it because it had a recent engine replacement.

I was floored because I knew this could mean issues down the road and sure enough, it was. First, when adding a Rostra cruise control, the audio guy pulled me into the garage and showed me some shoddy work that he couldn't figure out why it was done that way. I don't remember the exact details but it was messed up, connections were in properly etc.

Then I spotted the coolant well was always low. Then bent the metal tubing into the firewall during the engine install! Coolant was leaking all over. It was a nightmare.

Fast forward a year and electrical issues galore started to pile up. The alternator fried itself causing a battery light to come on. We finally sold it after dumping $2k worth of repairs into it.

My point is, a lot of Mitsubishi service techs don't know what they're doing because I'm guessing they have a high turn over rate? Who knows?

You're much better off going to a private Japanese auto specialist IMO after warranty.

From what I can tell, the CVT's lifespan was cut because it wasnt getting cooled?

    p0962 code

So the "new" used CVT replacement blew an 0962 code this afternoon. Solenoid A low current. Internet says it could be anything from low fluid to being born a middle child.

Any thoughts? Any order of diagnosis?

Anything you could share would be a huge help, including last rites, if warranted.

I don't think I've ran into that code yet. Since I don't trust most other peoples work(especially since your mechanic told you he can't accesses the cvt filters), it might be worth making sure the big round electrical plug is installed correctly. It's a pita to get off sometimes and easy to break if you get rammy with it. But if it wasn't plugged in you'd probably see other codes too? If you're ambitious, you could always just unplug it and make sure none of the pins are bent.
I don't think incorrect fluid level would throw that code but maybe?

Is it still driving okay? What color is that valvoline fluid? If you don't think the level is correct you could pick up 3qts of cvt fluid(that meets J4spec{most do}), do a drain and fill. Pull the plug, with the car level, you should get 2.5L out if it if the level was correct. If not, fill back up with 2.5L and you should be good to go as far as level goes(provided car is on level ground when draining it).

Thanks. I have Mistubishi Jatco fluid. I'll do a refill and filter at a different shop. If, after that and a check of the plugs, if the code is still intermittent, is it drivable? I've read conflicting stuff on this code as an intermittent code.

    Thanks again.

I just want to add in this thread that I also had my transmission on a 2014 replaced under warranty at upper 30k after having gotten the car used a year before. I am now also having transmission problems again but posted it in the general technical questions forum. So, this isn't the only person to have these issues.
