Question Just bought a 2019 manual mirage, I hear a high pitched hum coming from the back

Hey all! I can hear a high pitch hum(? not sure what to call it, it's just a "eeeeeeeee" very high pitched) coming from the back of the car. It's a manual transmission.

I have the car with me for 7 days before I choose to buy or not. To me it doesn't sound like a bearing "clak clak" sound, it's just a consistent high pitch hum. It doesn't change if I accelerate, If I'm in neutral, or if I'm entirely idle.

    Any ideas? Thank you all

I had someone say the same thing on reddit. Do you know if this is a hard/expensive part to find/replace? I'm seeing if its worth returning the car or not. As much as I fell in love with this little car, I don't want to finance something that will break on me and cost thousands of dollars.

    Thanks for the help!

The fuel pump can be accessed under the rear seat.

Thank you, is this an expensive repair and/or common issue with the mirage?

I'd try this first to figure out if the pump is the source of the sound:

When you first turn the key to "ON", (WITHOUT starting the engine), the fuel pump will run for a second or two to prime the system.

(If you have some fancy non-key/pushbutton ignition, I'm not sure how that works.)

    Is it the same/similar sound?

I just tested that and i cannot hear a sound in the ON position (without engine). It's hard to say because the car beeps as I put it in the ON position.
I did lift the backseats to hear better and I'm pretty sure it's coming from the fuel pump. I've decided to take it in to a mechanic on Monday. Crossing my fingers it's not a big issue and that I can keep the car.

Thank you so much for your help.

Many times a cracked pump can be repaired if you are the least bit handy. A new pump is $hundreds, even used it's likely costly. It's a rare but known problem with the Mirage. Plastics are overused in modern autos IMO.

They're not really a common problem that I've seen. They're easy to replace though.
