What is the use for this little hatch at the front?

I duck-taped the fog light blanks at the front of my Mirage and also taped over this little rectangular hatch at the front, see photo.

Now, I am wondering whether I should have omitted this part? What is the purpose of this entry?
A look inside shows a tapped hole...

Its to attach a tow hook.
