I understand what you are saying. On these cars with effective heat exchanging, designed to keep the oil at moderate temperatures, I can expect the oil to last longer than in most others. I had cars that easily reached 150°C oil temp on the highway, no comparison to this car. I've owned maybe some 50+ cars over the years. At some time I worked in TV outside-broadcasting and travelled by private vehicle about 60000 to 80000km / year. The cars were old and rusty, fixed and driven as long as possible, usually no more than a few months until repair was not worth it or not possible.

Here in central Europe it regularly used to be somewhere between the extremes of -15°C and +30°C, but in recent years with the climate change it has been between -5°C and +45°C. With a 0Wxx or 5Wxx oil at those temperatures there is practically no danger of oil reaching pour point. I buy a PAO + ester oil conform with Porsche C30, ACEA C3 and VW50700. I don't use the car for short distances but rather take the bicycle. The oil gets changed every 9000km at the latest. I think that should be safe.

Would you provide some examples of a color comparator? Product links would be helpful too. Something like this can be a cost-effective item in a toolbox.

Before the world got fancy and full of itself color, smell and feel were the LAB the famers used.

There are more precise ways to do this, but this IS workable.

This forum hasn't had any good dino juice banter lately, so I will dig up the dead horse to beat on for a bit...

Changed out the Mobil 1 Hybrid 0W-20 and Wix 57356 for Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30 and Baldwin B1402.

INSTANT change for the better. I had horrible start up rattle on the previous setup (I blame the oil more than the Wix) because on initial startup with a dry filter, the PP 5W-30 didn't rattle... riddle me that?? I doubt I will ever run the 0W-20 again, which stinks because I have a bit of a hoard of sale oil... maybe next time I will go back to the 0W-20 with the Baldwin and see... but as it is, I think I would always recommend 5W-30 or 5W-20 over the zero.

Not a fan of mobil 1 for this car.
    Have not tried the penzoil.

@Grumpybear agreed, am not sure of the need for oil analysis.

But the Mobil1 is Triple Action, whereas the Penzoil is evidently only single action. That's like giving up 66.7% action.

I run a Baldwin filter also B1431 which is the longer version of the B1402 with 5w-30. The only time I get any startup rattle is if I let the car sit for about a week. Then it's only for about 1-2 seconds. Otherwise if I'm driving it daily or even 2 or 3 times a week nothing.

I'm somewhat banking on these cars doing better on 5W-30 full synthetic oil. I feel the 0W-20 recommendation in North America is based purely on economy & not the best engine protection

Once I used up the 0W-20 I had, I am not going back to it. I mixed some 0W-20 with 5W-30 during the winter months to get rid of it.

I am trying Grumy's suggestion of Mobil 1 0W40 European in my 2011 Forester, & it seems fine. I only put a few thousand miles on my Forester each year. I change oil in my Forester once a year (every spring/early summer) regardless of the low mileage.

Just saw some new chemistry information from Infinium. One of four companies that make the additives. We are in trouble kiddos.
