Bangkok auto show 2014: base, entry level Mirage looks like this...

It's been a long time since I've seen a new car with bare steel wheels and a tiny center cap, at least in Canada. In developing economies where cutting every penny counts, it still makes sense to substitute a 25 cent center cap for a $2 wheel cover.

This photo was taken by IndianAutosBlog.com, which was reporting on the Mirage lineup on display now at the 2014 Bangkok auto show. Because the Mirage lineup is heading to India in 2015/16.

A bunch more pics of this stripped Thai market Mirage here: http://indianautosblog.com/2014/03/m...-mirage-125539

Lighter - definitely! Don't know about the the Thai specs, but the base Malaysian 5-speed Mirage is 825 kg / 1818 lbs.

The last car I had with bare steel wheels & little center cap was a 1992 Geo Metro. 12 inch wheels, too.

We don't have that ultra-barebones version here in the Philippines, but the entry-level GLX trim does come pretty close to that, save for the bare rims with center caps (it gets the aero hubcaps). Compared to the GLS (my car), it lacks the following:

    • ABS
    • Front anti-roll bar
    • Fog lamps
    • Aero rear spoiler
    • Color-keyed wing mirrors and door handles
    • Cargo lid (you can peek at the cargo area from the outside!)
    • Navigation-enabled stereo
    • 60/40 folding rear seats (it's a bench that folds in one unit instead)
    • Rear speakers
    • Keyless push-button start
    • Interior chrome accents
    • Leather wrapping on the gear stick and steering wheel
    • The blue, green, and yellow colors (Thailand has them on all models, I think)
    • Alloy wheels
    • Heater (no-no for you Canadians!!!) (It does come with an aircon)
    • Height adjustable driver's seat

That said, it is available with a CVT, for an extra Php50,000 (about US $1200)!

Alpha, is there a big price gap between the two trims?

In thailand the eco cars have to offer a version under 400,000 baht (about $12,000). These are very basic cars but OK for someone who just wants transport. They don't even have radios. Not many of these are sold, most customers opt to spend a bit more and get more equipment.

Roughly $2000+ between the base trim glx and the TOTL gls sir.

Btw The 2014 base trim glx already has body colored exterior door handles and side mirrors. It also has the cargo lid. I think it also has rear speakers. The 2014 models also has factory power locks.

I bought my 2013 glx model on oct 2013 (the 2014 model was already out that time), i still opted to go for the older model because the dealer offered a huge discount on them with lots of freebies. Saved almost $1000. Got a free ipad mini too lol
