Now the seam on the muffler has started to open up.
I could hear the exhaust gas escaping while idling next to a building with the windows open so I figured my repair joints were loose.
Nope....the repair was gas tight, and the seam is facing the floor so a temporary repair was lotsa fun.
The closest universal muffler I can find is a Walker 17864, 17" long body vs the 21" lg original and 6" dia vs the 5.5" of the original.
Maybe I should just call it a day and find out what the dealer wants for a new system?

I would hose clamp a tractor muffler on one of these before I would pay a dealer to stick a fist up my exhaust pipe...

I bought a Walker universal muffler from Crappy Tire (walker # 17864) and sawzalled the old muffler out.

3 clamps ( 2x 1 1/2" https://www.oreillyauto.com/detail/c...cific%29&pos=0, 1x 1 3/4" https://www.oreillyauto.com/detail/c...st+clamp&pos=0) and a 1 3\4 " x 1 1/2"adapter pipe.https://www.oreillyauto.com/detail/c...er/nic0/548548 I used the adapter pipe (nickson 012-8547-4)at the rear outlet for strength, nice and quiet, should last until the hangers finish rusting away....and the walker muffler is marked with an "A" for the inlet and a "B" for the outlet, it's non reversable. It was a straight forward job with no surprises.

What Basic said about using a tractor muffler before submitting to the dealer's solution made me think of this.....
I bought an antique diesel engine years ago that had no original muffler....not to worry I had an old muffler off of my diesel Smart ForTwo.....it fit with a little egging out of the muffler flange holes. I eventually found a proper 'pepper pot' muffler.
