    Whine in 3rd gear?

    All,

Wondering if any of you 5 speed owners have noticed that 3rd gear whines? I figured it isnt a big deal, but it does make more noise than the rest of my forward gears.. Is this transmission used on any other vehilces?

    Hi -

I didn't notice it in the 5MT car I drove, but I was only in it for about half an hour.

    Hopefully others will chime in.

And welcome to the forum, too.

EDIT June 5th: I do hear a light whine in 3rd in the loaner 5-speed Mirage I'm driving this week.

Not to my knowledge, I don't get a whine.

None here, either. Maybe it'll quiet down as your tranny wears in.

    Welcome to the club.

I haven't heard any difference in the sounds of third gear compared to the others. However, I don't spend much time in third gear so maybe it's there and I just haven't noticed it.

EDIT: So I tried doing a bit of a test listening to the various gears as I drove around this morning, and third gear definitely does run at a higher pitch than the other gears. I've got about 10,000 miles on my Mirage, so I'm not sure if the 3rd gear whine in your car will go away with time.

I have NOT noticed this on the mirage, then again, I try to shift below 3k rpms.

What I can tell you is that on different vehicles, gearing affects engine noise. When I had my ninja 600, 3rd gear between 3-7k rpm made a supercharger-sounding-whine, which did NOT happen on any other gear at any other rpm range.

Did you notice what RPMs the whine started/ended on for me to specifically listen to?

I also have noticed a whine only in 3rd gear. My old car did that in 2nd. I've been looking around for gear oil to do a fluid change, but I'm having a hard time finding 75w80 that the manual calls for. I'm wondering if using 75w90 would do any harm.

I noticed it immediately when I got the car. I wouldn't worry about it, Mitsubishi MT's are known to be noisy

    Here's REDLINE MTL synthetic gear oil that's a 75w-80 GL-4 , http://www.redlineoil.com/product.aspx?pid=45&pcid=7 . Used their MT-90 ( 75w-90 , GL-4 ) in a 5 speed manual for a 2000 Chevy Prizm ( Corolla ) and a '08 Toyota Yaris . Helped improve shifting without the grinding ( notchiness ) and the clunk into reverse . Also improved cold shifting .

I get the whine. I love it.

Mine happens a bit in second and fourth if you listen carefully
