I did this on my Ford, and I did it wrong. The wrong way is to open the hood at the carwash, turn the dial to "engine wash" and spray the engine down, then turn it to "rinse" and spray the detergent off. Doing this may lead to the engine sputtering and missing on the 3rd cylinder (thanks Scan Gauge!) and me drying out the hollowed out cavities where the spark plugs live with bits of rag - then replacing all plugs/wires for good measure.

I do not know the correct way to do it, and since then have adopted an "it only needs to be clean on the inside" mentality - so I don't miss oil changes but I don't wash the engine any more.

Back in the day we'd cover vital "protectable" areas with aluminum foil then proceed like you did above. It worked!

Sprayed engine with truck wash let it work it magic for approx ten min then hose off. Just make sure hose is on mist and not spray no issues

If it's oily, you can forget wiping it off clean. Sometimes I even use brake cleaner (very strong degreaser) to clean oils
