Got the CVT ... had to for lots of stop-and-go city driving ... otherwise I would have gone manual!

Interesting about finding that bad oil quality. I've been keeping my eyes on the dipstick and nothing yet...

I wonder what (might) be wrong with mine then! Maybe cos I'm pushing the engine hard from the very beginning!

Changed to 5w-20 dino at ~100 for an extended break in and for the higher heat abilities.

Update: Drained the oil at 250 miles ... the oil was filled with metal particles!! Changed the oil and filter again, and installed a magnetic drain plug.

Update: Drained the oil again at almost 500 miles on the odo ... found metal particles again, in the oil, and on the magnetic drain plug, and eyeing it, the oil had maybe about 1/2 as many visible particles as found during my 250mi change. (The oil wasn't light amber colored anymore, nor was it dark like liquid chocolate, but somewhere in between - after only 250 miles) Changed the oil, put in a new filter. I've been driving with a lighter touch now, mixed city + highway, and I'm averaging 48mpg so far.

Next change will be at 1000 miles!

If youre that concerned, have a real oil analysis done by a lab like Blackstone labs. The can tell you a lot by the condition of your oil.

Have you talked to the dealer?

Finding stuff in the oil is pretty typical for the first few thousand miles.

These call for 0w-20. You may void your warranty if you let the dealer know you were running conventional 5w-20. Does it specify 5w-20 may be used?

I'm doing this & posting not because I'm concerned with my engine, but because I want to optimize its wear pattern and maximize its power and fuel usage

I will get the oil analyzed after 1,500 miles though ...

I put in 5w20 at 100 miles, and 5w30 at 250 and 500. I don't see a problem with either, since they're both ILSAC/API-SN certified. 0W20 is "strongly recommended", but not required, per the manual. Besides, it looks like 0w20, 5w20, 5w30, and 10w30 are all recommended for the same engine in Japan.
