Mirage getting a new competitor in Canada: 2015 Nissan Micra

    Img source: Nissan

    This is interesting:

Nissan announced today they're bringing the Micra to Canada in order to have a cheaper (entry level) hatchback that slots beneath the Versa Note. But the company isn't planning to do the same in the U.S.

    • sales begin "in the spring"
    • price to be announced... update: $9,998 to start (manual transmission; no A/C or automatic option on the base car)
    • manufactured in Mexico
    • no powertrain details given

Per Wikipedia, the drivetrain elsewhere is quite similar indeed:

It is based on the new Type-V platform with a new 1.2-litre HR12DE[50][54] (XH5) 59 kW (79 hp) 108 N·m (80 ft·lbf), 3-cylinder engine (the first for a March/Micra)....fuel efficient, delivering 18 km to a litre of petrol. The new Idling Stop System is reported to improve fuel economy by 2.0 km/L. ... coefficient of drag is just 0.32 ... keep weight to 915 kg (2,020 lb). The car was designed to appeal to a unisex crowd, yet look stylish and elegant to face the tough competition.

    And, from http://driving.ca/nissan/auto-news/n...-a-2015-model/

"The car is very compact with an overall length of 3.82 meters and, contrary to European models that are powered by a supercharged three-cylinder 1.2-litre engine featuring direct-injection and delivering 97 horsepower, the Micras offered in Canada will be powered by the 109 horsepower four-cylinder 1.6-litre engine that also equips the Versa Note and that engine will be mated to either a five-speed manual gearbox or a four-speed automatic.

“We expect to be very competitive in fuel consumption, we will not be number one with the Micra, but we will be very competitive on that front as well as on the running costs front,” Meunier said."

Today I also found out about Micra and did a little research. I didn't find any Micras with 1.6L Engine. And by comparing to the Mirage, where it has no space under the hood for 4-cyl engine, it's hard to say if it's true that the Micra is going to get 1.6L engine with 4-speed automatic.

Ok, I use the UK web-sites to compare Mirage and Micra. This is what I got:

It seems strange to me that Nissan would make a smaller version of the Note with the same drive train. Then again, they had the Versa Hatch with the Sentra drive train and the Versa Sedan was a whole different car. I suppose they could tune the engine differently and match the transmission to allow the smaller, lighter, more aerodynamic Micra to do well. The Note sure isn't outstanding in terms of fuel efficiency.

Here is a review by "the fast lane". He likes it quite a lot, it seems:

Agreed - I could see this potentially stealing some Note buyers. Is that what they want? Obviously they've analyzed it up and down and decided it'll be a net gain.

TFLcar guy.. He liked it a lot! 1.2L supercharged 3-cyl is interesting.

    Paraphrasing:

Handles nicely - not a lot of body roll. Nearly as fun as the Mazda2 in the fun department
However: it's not going to beat the Mirage's fuel economy, regardless of engine choice (esp. the 1.6).

An overview/preview of the Canadian Micra in the Toronto Star today.

In an insult to the Mirage, they completely left it out of the list of competitors the Micra will be up against! That's gotta hurt, Mitsu Canada!

Drivetrain confirmed: "109-horsepower, 1.6-litre inline four (same as the Note), and comes with a standard five-speed manual transmission or an optional four-speed automatic."

    Trims:

It will come in S, SV and SR trim levels. The base S will be devoid of frills such as power windows, power door locks and air conditioning. Opting for the automatic transmission adds air conditioning and cruise control.
Moving up to the SV adds keyless entry, power locks and windows, Bluetooth connectivity and audio controls on the steering wheel.
The top-of-the-line SR adds sporty exterior and interior cosmetic touches and a 4.3-inch, in-dash colour display with rear-view camera.
Pricing: they repeated this will be their trump card...

Although pricing won’t be released until spring, Nissan Canada president Christian Meunier says it will be the least expensive car in its class, a spot currently held by the $11,945 Spark.

Doh, that is not good news for the Mirage...

    Competition strengthens the breed.

And Mirage is still going to smoke the Micra's 1.6L powertrain in terms of efficiency.

True, but the versa isn't selling well because it gets the best fuel economy, its because its dirt cheap.

True. But it's hard to say how well the Versa sedan sells in Canada, because they don't break it down in their sales figures. The hatchback (Versa Note) is ~1400 more than the sedan.
