It is very confusing, my engine's RPMs with a CVT on the highway doing like 65-70 mph are @ around 2100-2200 RPMs VS. like 3200 RPMs using a 5 speed equipped Mirage at the same speed..... There is no way that the stick shift is going to do better MPGs on 60+ MPH highway cruising with way more engine load....
I think the key is that engine RPM is not the same as engine load. Take this example: You're in gear (MT or CVT), downhill, off the gas, at 3,000 RPM, but using no fuel. This is (someone please correct me if I'm wrong) an example of DFCO (deceleration fuel cut off). The the potential energy becomes kinetic energy, transferred through the wheels and transmission to the engine, which would cause the pistons to move (without fuel being supplied).

I average 5.3L/100km on the highway at 120km/h. I do this 6 days a week for my 100km each way commute. My car has over 100,000kms on it, and I still average the same. It drops to 6.3L/100km with my winter tires on, however. All these measures are by my car's output.
