Price war in Canada: base Mirage now $9998 (plus delivery, dealer fees, etc.)

You may have already seen this tidbit in a couple of other threads, but thought it was worthy of a dedicated topic...

Nissan launched the Micra in Canada last month with a bonkers $9,998 starting price on the base car. And it's apparently ignited a price war in the Great White North, because Mitsubishi is now matching the price on the base Mirage with a $2500 rebate... for the month of June, at least.

And there's even a $500 "first time Mitsubishi buyers" rebate available on top of that, which would mean a new Mirage for $9,498. Converted to the US dollar, that's $8,689! EDIT/Correction: Canoehead pointed out that you can't combine the two rebates.

I just jumped over to GM Canada's web site... no changes yet to the Spark's pricing... but I'll be surprised if they don't respond too. The Spark used to be Canada's cheapest car until the Micra came along.

This is big enough news that a U.S. news site, Green Car Reports, has commented on it: Canada Gets Two Cars Below $10,000: Mitsubishi Mirage, Nissan Micra (I bet others will follow suit.)

    Ain't competition grand?

Funny story: 2 nights ago, neighbours were going out for a walk and stopped to chat when they saw the Mirage on the street.

Them: "Hey, is that the new $10k car?"

Me: "Nope, this one's ~$12.5k. You're thinking of the Nissan Micra."

New answer as of today: "Yup, this is the new $10k car."

I used to not mind no AC and no cruise control, but now I'll gladly pay the extra $50/month for these luxuries.

Where did this info come from? I'm going in tomorrow to meet with a sales guy, and didn't know about this. Are you talking about the "first auto program" for those who have never financed a car before? I don't think that one is applicable to the base Mirage - only the SE or ES with CVT/no rebate ones.

Shucks. Usually I like being right - this time I was rooting for you!

Oh well. Tomorrow I will know just what sort of deal can be had.
