Weird. Mine's still "acceptable" at close to 5000 miles.

Need to check for shavings though.

I'm pushing the engine at high RPMs though to break it in. That probably accounts for my oil results.

I don't doubt you, but I've done my own "pushing."

Also, not sure about mitsu and the plant the mirage is built, but there is little to no break in period for a lot of cars because the engine is dyno'd (on some manufacturers) as soon as the engine can start.

The "beat the engine" break in is usually for rebuilt-by-hand engines.

Doesn't stop me from occasionally hanging out at 6,000 RPM for 5-10 minutes at a time as I blast down the highway WOT at 105-110MPH.

Oh, yeah, I'm at 16,000 miles.

The Mirage might have been dyno'ed, but for such an inexpensive car, I personally doubt it.

    Update:

The dealership recommended 5k oil changes because they apparently use synthetic 0-w20.

I visually checked the oil at a few miles under 5k and noticed that it still looked acceptable. May have had 1k miles more and it might have still been good. The mirage's 5k oil looked way better than conventional oil at 3k miles.

The dealership gave me a complimentary 1st oil change (as they should) but notified me that it would have been ~$50 for the next oil change. So I guess I wont be returning for my next oil change...

I was used to about $25 for a standard oil change. Usually did them at about 3500 increments.

With synthetic, I'm going with the recommended 7500 mile oil change interval. Dealer recommended it, as well as the manual. At $50, but double the time between changes, it comes out about the same - although the Mirage takes less oil than any previous car I've owned.

I got a price break by buying 3 years of oil changes from the dealer when I got the car. It was a bit cheaper than paying for the service individually, plus they do a tire rotation every other change.

The dealer is the closest place to my house, and the service department has been excellent in the past, so it would have been my 1st choice for oil changes anyway.

Got a card when we bought our Galant in '03 that guaranteed a price of $20 (the then current price for oil changes) for as long as you owned the car. That proved to be a pretty good deal, as prices have continually crept up - even at the quick change places. They must have learned from that and no longer offer it.

Ares you could buy the 0w-20 oil such as Pennzoil Platinum , Castrol , Mobil 1 , or other brand . Then pay for the oil filter and labor . Some charge about $20 , includes tax for install .
